Hi everyone I'm also from PA. Im from Somerset County in Somerset. So I'm near you StephC. I actually will be having mine if I get my insurance to pay for it. In Cleveland Clinic, Ohio just because I was already being seen by my endo up there and she refered me to have it done. Its a long ride up there so I probally will stay there for a week after at my reletaves so I won't have to come the whole way back up in a week. If I could just convince them to let me stay in the hospital the whole time. Get pain meds through IVs and get waited on and make sure im comfy and see all the soctors I need to see for the whole week. but hopefully we can stay at my relataves there or they have a guest house on campus that they can help with staying there for the week. Im nervious but excited and I really want it done right away. But I don't even know if my PA assestance will cover it. But I have not even seen any docs yet I just sent in my survey and questionarre. Its always nice to meet others in PA.

If you have it done in Ohio would will do your follow up care? I am without a doctor now and have been having a hard time getting a doc in PA to take on another doctors lapband patient. Will you go back to Ohio for fills?

Welcome to labandtalk. Having my lapband changed my life...I could not be happier!!!

Hello All-

:clap2:

I'm new to this board and excited to be here! I am in the Pittsburgh area... actually I live near Greensburg, about 30 miles east of the city, and I work downtown. I am interested in the lap band procedure and have tried a couple times to register for the informational seminar at AGH with Dr. Colella. No one ever answers the phone and no one calls me back. Oh well. Still trying. Not set on who I woudl want to go to either so recommendations are much appreciated.

Anyhow.. I know I would like to have this done. I've done all the research, done the diet thing as we all have and been jealous of, but very happy for, the wonderful people who have lost so much with the lap band!

My main question is this: I have a family doctor but I haven't been to him in a few years. I would ideally love to just make an appointment with a lap band surgeon and go in for a consult and just have it done.

Do i NEED to be supervised by a family doctor? Also, do all surgeons require the 6 month waiting period? I have thought about this for a long time.. and if I would have just taken the steps back then, I would have gone through the 6 months many times over! I just want to have a consult and if I decide to definitely go through with it, schedule the testing and surgery.

IS THIS POSSIBLE or do we all have to wait it out?

Thanks so much for this wonderful board!

Best... MJ :help:

welcome mj-

is insurance going to pay for the band? if so you may need to be referred by your regular doc...check with your ins company. the same thing with the 6 month wait. sometimes it is not the doc but the ins company that says you have to diet for 6 months first (like we all have not been dieting our whole darn lives!!)

i did not have to do either (although i did discuss with my doc cause we get along very well) i can tell you that it is the BEST thing i have ever done for myself...i COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED. it changed my life..i am living again. don't wait any longer...make a appt today!!

just my two cents : ) good luck!

LizMoore,

sorry to hear about your bad news. my doctor is also carol mccloskey. i have 3 more months to go in my supervised weight and exercise program. can't the dr's office write a letter to the insurance co. you seem to have alot of other illnesses. you would think those would help you get approved for the lapband. i hope things get better for you.

Hey Liz,

It's time to grab the credit card and head out of Pa. I knew I would get the same hassles so I saved some money and did my research. I was headed to Dr Ortiz in Mexico when I discover Dr Kirchenbaum in Denver who will band you for under $10,000. He's a godsend for those of us that have no co morbidity factors. Check that your insurance will cover any complications and you're on the road to surgery. I know it sounds expensive but you could choose a new car for twice the price or a new life. It's worth it to me

I don't know if you found a Dr. or not yet but I like near Ebensburg, PA. Thats kinda in the middleof Altoona, Johnstown and Indiana. My Dr. is Dr. Newline from Altoona but I know that Dr. Marley from Windber also does the Lapband. If you need more info, let me know.....

I have heard very good things about both Dr Marley and Dr Neulin. Marley is out of Windber and has banded 2 close friends of mine. They love him. Dr Neulin is out of Altoona and highly recommended by the trauma docs I work with. Dr Marley charges about $14,500 for everything and Neulin is reasonable but Altoona Hospital charges about $17,000 for the use of their facilities. I thought that was ridiculous for a self payer like myself so I'm headed out of the area where I have a great doc that charges $9950 for everything. My aftercare and fills will be done by Dr Brinkley in Frederick Md. She does fills for out of the area banders.

Hello everyone. I am new to this board. Have a few questions. I went to first visit at the Weight Loss Clinic in Harrisburg. Sent all the paperwork in about a month ago and still do not have an appointment. To think I have 3 more before scheduling surgery! I really want to get this done. Anyone have any idea of what the wait is like?? I am also considering Dr. Kirshenbaum in Colorado because of the price. Would like to know if you know of any fill doctors who will do fills for someone who was banded out of state?? I live in Allentown.

Any help is appreciated!! Hope I can say I am a bandster soon! I am self pay. ..........so price is also a consideration.

Welcome Lachanga,

I was banded oct 4 by Dr Kirxhenbaum and I loved him and his staff. He was wonderful, He even gave us his cell no# in case we had a question when we got home. There is a fill USA in NJ and a Dr Brinkley in Frederick Md that does fills. I am considering going back to Dr K because I liked him so much.

Today I got a second appt with the Weight Loss Center and Natalie called me from Dr. K to set up my consultation for November 5. Now my decision will be up to just plain scheduling. I have received so much positive feedback about Dr. K I have no doubts now. I just want to get this done in December because I can take some personal leave and not have to take alot of no pay days at work!!

How are you feeling? How did you feel flying back to PA since it is a long trip! Would it be advisable to take somebody with me? I am 43 years old and really am tired of being tired! I just have to do this now or after my kid leaves to college I probably won't be able to afford it!

Thanks so much for your reply. It is greatly appreciated. I just love that we all have the strength left over to support each other thru this BIG decision!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
