Surgery Dec 11 & freaking out (smoking issue)

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is 2 days away and I am still smoking - I tried and tried but no success. Everything else is going well, pre-op diet, tests, insurance approval. I tried Chantix and I am currently reading Alen Carr's book... should I postpone my surgery? I guess I have to call my surgeon to discuss. Sorry everyone, I guess I just needed to purge the stress.

Wow sorry to hear that...i had to stop 6 weeks before surgery..when did u have to stop by? my hubby is on chantix (he smoked a pack a day) and he is no longer smokin as of november 12th best thing we coulda bought...call and talk to ur doctor some dont require there patients to stop smokin til the night before surgery (those are the lucky ones lol)...the only reason they want u 2 stop is for clear lungs and blood clots smoking stops blood from circulating (atleast that is what i was told)...well good luck keep us posted

I understand that quitting smoking is a hard thing to do. However, if you're doing something drastic enough like surgery to become healthier why would you want to put that in your lungs?

I am not preaching to you because I was a smoker. I just had to look at it as I want to be healthy. I didn't want to trade one thing for another. I just simply had to quit. I used the patch after a failed attempt of cold turkey. You're gonna have to dig deep to find that will.

I wish you the best of luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
