What exactly is a "NORMAL" diet???

Recommended Posts

:blush:The GREAT news is that I've lost 32 pounds since being banded on 11/5/08. I have my first fill scheduled for next Tuesday. My doc said to be eating a "normal" diet for one week prior to fill - what exactly is a "NORMAL" diet??

I've been eating tuna salad, eggs, turkey burgers, soft veggies - what I don't know is what SHOULDN'T I eat - how about a salad? I feel like I need to expand my choices, but I'm afraid to eat something full of carbs or something that will get stuck??? HELP!!!

Hi Mom22,

You should eat ANYTHING your stomach & band can tolerate so long as it is not high in fat, calories, sugars, etc. The goal is to eat healthy in moderation on the band. Of course, "normal" means that you are eating SOLID foods, as the band guidelines dictate. Your stomach & band may not be able to tolerate some solid foods like breads or asparagus.....so with time, you will find what solid foods work with your band.

Did your doctor or nutritionist discuss what you should be eating at this stage?

Mine told me to eat eat solid Proteins veggies and healthy natural carbs like fruit, dairy and whole grains. I am to eat the Protein first, then the veggies then the carbs and stop when I feel satisfied.

Don't be afraid to eat. When you try something new, eat slowly and take small bites until you are sure you can tolerate it. Watch foods like bread that can swell up and get stuck and for fibrous veggies like broccoli, celery and asaparagus as well as meats that are tough or dry. If you can chew it to a liquid form then it should be safe.

oatmeal, eggs, lean meat, fresh fruits and veggies are all great choices. I am not supposed to eat foods that are high in fat and calories and low in nutrition, you are eating less so you need to be sure to get good nutrition in. I am also not to eat soft slider foods as a meal (soups, shakes, puddings, applesauce etc.) It needs to be solid so that it can fill you up and keep you full.

Your doctor should have provided you a list of healthy food options and directions. And/or your nutrionist should have. Contact them and get their feedback.

My doctor provided me a binder of information, plus I continue to see the nutrionist for support and suggestions.

To me a normal diet means you get a mix of nutrients in a day - several differnt types of fruit and vegetables, a serve of wholegrains such as Cereal or bread, a couple of serves of Protein in the form of dairy, lean meat and eggs. And it is also entirely normal to not be afraid to have the odd treat!

In my view it is NOT normal to drink several Protein Shakes a day, live on soft foods, and avoid entire food groups.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
