Hey, what do you guys think of the t.v. show Big Medicine?

It is about two doctors Father and Son who perform banding and bypass procedures on obese patients. You get two meet the patients, see their struggles, see their surgery, plus their aftercare.

I love this show, because they keep it real. They show the good and the bad.

I've seen that show, and it is quite interesting. I believe it was on the Discovery Channel or Discovery Health (or both).

it's on discovery health, TLC and the discovery channel. Go to the website www.discoveryhealth.com and search out "Big Medicine" and they'll find it on the tv schedule and email you reminders. Seems like there is a "marathon" on December 21 on Discovery Health.

This past Friday's episode was really interesting. Robert and Garth (the doctors) have to help Robert's daughter...Garth's sister.

The sister had gastric banding done, but lives out of their area. She had an issue with a fill. It was odd, because it was a delayed reaction to the fill. She had been doing great with the fill, but then she could not keep fluids down and was vomiting.

I got the impression from the show that her bariatric doctor told her to go to the ER for help. The ER room did not know how to help her. They tried over and over to find her port, but could not.

She called her brother and he and her father both instructed her to get on a plane ASAP to get to Ohio, where they were at.

When she got to her brother and dad three hours after a plane flight, she was shaking and really scared. When she layed on the table and they lifted her shirt, you could see all the bruising and marks left by all the attempts the ER doctor made in trying to locate the port.

As soon as her brother (Garth) removed some Fluid, she was able to finally drink (8 oz water) and was much better.

The moral of the story: After care is so important. How available is your doctor to handle emergencies???

Oh, I love that part of the show too. It gives me hope when I can see other people accomplishing their health goals. It is not so scary when I can see others going through what I am going through.

I'm not sure what TBL is... But The actual surgeries are pretty accurate. Course only few dr's in my area do the over 450 pounds area. My own surgeon's don't do over 400. They are much more technically difficult, and require special beds, etc.

My banded life is very similar to those of the banded on the show. However, by their website, they require liquids longer and mushies longer than my surgeon. They are also much more aggressive with their fills. My surgeon won't give more than 1 cc at a time. They've been seen on tv to do more like 2 or 3 ccs. Only thing negative I see... is they show all patients as successes. Unfortunately there are some that fail.

However they did have one case, where the woman had a band placed when they first came out. She had some problems with it, and basically didn't follow band rules. She ended up actually gaining weight, and went for a bypass. They were able to do it without removing the band, because the band had erroded into her stomach. She had a dramatic weight loss.

Hey sorry terilynn112, TBL is the show the biggest loser

. I think i see the difference now though, this show is more directed at surgery and TBL is more focused on fitness and nutrition. I didn't know that lap bands could erode into your stomach. That's scary stuff.

I love this show! I set my TiVo to copy it when it is on. I wish they would do more episodes! It seems like I have seen all of them. Watching_tv_by_Maxian.gif

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
