Newbie: Foods To Avoid or Be Careful With?

Recommended Posts

Is there a list of foods to avoid or to kinda watch for newbies?

If not, can we make one ?

Thank you !!!

Well my problem with that idea- is everyone has different foods> I have problems with bread & bread products (the closest to universal I know); white or brown rice (but I can eat rice a roni - go figure); lettuce and tomatoes citrus fruits and cabbage or brussel sprouts; occasionalyy- dry meat and other stuff.

I have trouble now with untoasted bread. I certainly don't eat a roll with dinner, but will have a sandwich and as long as the bread is toasted, I take small bites and chew well. I also use heavier breads like whole wheat, not white! I don't eat white rice either, but could probably do it with gravy or mixed in, like the rice-a-roni. I have given up shrimp, oysters, crab legs, etc. in place of flaky fish. Dry chicken is a no-no. I guess it's alot of testing out of things. Think about whether or not you will like it when it's chewed to bits...which is why I don't do shrimp or oysters. yuck.

I can do tostitos and other chips, even cheetos (go figure...you know how those do your teeth, why do they go down so well?!) but I don't do alot of crackers. maybe I could but I tend to pick and choose my calories and can live without them so I do. Go figure there, too, since I will eat a few cheetos!! (?)

OH! I can't do spinich and artichoke dip...don't know if it's the spinich or artichokes? and I pick out the celery in chicken salads. No raw broccoli either, but steamed is fine if I chew well. My list for no-no foods is a bit longer since my first fill. But I certainly don't feel like I'm missing much. I get plenty!

I have never had a problem with any food since banding untill this last fill.

Wow, today I had 2 pices of toast for breaksfast. I ate 1/2 a slice and thought I was going to die. Almost had my first PB. :D Did have my first case of slimes. can you say YUCK??? Where does it all come from. Took a couple of hours to feel all better. Then the kids were having french fries with their lunch today so I ate 2 and I mean only 2. and there it went again. Pain Pain Pain. slime slime slime. Guess what? NO MORE bread FOR ME. I can't take it!!!

In my book this is a good thing. The band is working!!!!!!!!!!! Breads not so good anyway right? Carbs :)

Other than bread I don't have any food I can't eat, YET!!

Jane (Burnsun) is right, everyone's expeirnce with the band is vastly different. Some people can do eggs, some cannot. chicken is off my list for public food. It gets stuck way too much, and it's been one of my two PBs.

Chances are, your list won't look anything like my list.

And there isn't anything that we "can't" have. This isn't a diet, it is an alternative lifestyle!

Oh, and what you were fine with last Thursday, may not work for you on next Wednesday. Or may not work after you've had a fill.

Everything is a fear in the beginning. It is all trial and error. There are some things I just NEVER would try. Carbonation is one of them.

After a fill, life is different. Foods that you could eat before are a BIG no-no after.

Vines is right. What works today may not work tomorrow. The band is a finicky little bitch.

There is definitely a list of "suspect" foods that many have problems with. I will try and find my "list". It isn't absolute and may or may not be a problem for you. It just will give you an idea/clue about what foods are "suspects".

Beginning Bandster Trial and Error Method for "suspect" foods: Cut into small piece. Place gently into mouth while listening intently and concentrating. Chew chew chew as much as you can and gain the courage to swallow. Sit for a second motionless and try and listen, feel and hear if anything is going to go wrong. Breathe a sigh of relief after about 30 seconds that nothing has happened. Repeat above steps. :)

I love corn on the cob but haven't yet tried it because i think it is a food that I just will never be able to eat. Anyone able to eat corn? How about salads? I like salads but am still afraid to try them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
