Practicing for post-op on Liquids - What is too much sugar

Recommended Posts

Good evening. I am getting the band on 12/17/08. I have been on liquids only (three Slim Fast and Soup each day) so it is not quite a shock after surgery. I met with the nutritionist and who said that the Slim Fast had too much sugar. The four items above give me the Protein required. I am wondering if the sugar is such a big deal when I am taking in only 1,000 calories per day. Any advice for alternatives. I thought sugar was a big deal with the bypass. Thank you.

i was told pre op sugar doesn't matter...although post op you will want to change to no sugar at all. it does affect the way that you loose weight, as well as spikes and dips which makes you crash or not depending.....you want your hormones and your intestines to get used to no sugar added foods. In two weeks you can be sugar free totally.

I was going to say the same thing. Pre-op they allowed sugar, but post-op I was also told to switch to sugar free items. Staying away from white sugar helps to decrease your carb cravings. I don't know that there really is a concrete number for the amount of sugar. The best thing to do would be to call your doctor's office or nut and see if they can/will give you a definite answer on the amounts. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
