Banding on Monday, Dec 8th

Recommended Posts

Greetings.

My name is Jon and I am from Merritt Island, Florida. I am 36 years old and am currently 5'8" and 280lbs.

When I was younger I had no issues with my weight - then again being in the Marine Corps reserves and full time with the LAPD tends to keep you active enough so that it's hard to put on weight! Since I left California and moved back to Florida I haven't been nearly as active and put on a lot of weight. Being a desk jockey doesn't help that much either, nor does working 16 hour days. Recently my position at work has changed and I am only putting in 8 hours a day, so now is the right time to take it off!

Both my wife Sonya and I will be getting banded on the morning of Dec 8th - her first then me. Her brother will be staying with us for a little bit to help out.

I think this is something I should have done long ago, but because of how my company set us up with Cigna, Bariatric procedures are NOT covered, so we're both going through as self-funded.

We both look forward to losing all the weight we've put on throughout the years, and I personally look forward to getting even close to the weight I was back when I was in the Marine Corps :-) .

I'll see everyone around the forum!

Congrats to both you and your wife. You both have made what I consider life changing and life saving decisions. I will be getting banded within the next month. I wish my husband could also, but he had some health issues in the past, so I don't think they will let him get it. Both of you be blessed.....

My wife had been planning on it for quite a while and was rather disappointed when she had all of her ducks in a row and then found out at the last minute that our insurance wouldn't cover it.

We sat back and waited a number of months to go by so that a settlement in a lawsuit would come through. Once that arrived, she asked if I was interested. Of course I said yes, so she got the ball rolling for me and now less than 1 month later from step 1 I am getting ready to have it done the same day.

I've got hopefully a long life ahead of me - Monday will be day #1 of the new life!

Wife got home at around 2pm, me at 4pm.

She was able to go out for a walk not too long after getting home - me, I just now woke up.

Honestly, I don't even remember getting home. All I can remember from the point of them putting the oxygen mask on me was one brief moment afterward with the nurse telling me that I got a bit rambunctious when I first came out of the anesthesia. I do also remember waking up in my bed here at the house and it feeling like I was so swollen up with gas that I could barely breathe, but after taking some really deep, slow breaths, I was fine.

Anyhow, I look forward to interacting with everyone here!

(I'm heading back to the rack now! LOL!)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
