josephine 1 Posted December 5, 2008 We have been so programmed only to drink when eating that in our minds we have fooled ourselves to believe that we can't swallow without a liquid to help the food to go down. You just have to tell your brain that you are NOT allowed to do this and it becomes a habit just like it became a habit to drink while eating. Trust me, if you drink enough liquids during the course of the day and of course not while you are eating you will break that habit and know that you never had to drink while eating. Just like Nike's logo................. Just Do It (Because you can) Josephine
WannaBSkinnyB 0 Posted December 5, 2008 They say you shouldn't drink while you eat, not that you can't. I still takes sips while I eat.
kmays234 0 Posted December 5, 2008 I used to be really bad about drinking while I was eating. But since I've been reading and doing all my homework on Lapband, I have started focusing on not drinking while I eat. I used to drink 2-4 glasses of soda or Water a meal, now I'm lucky if I finish 1/2 glass of water.
BLAKQUEEN 33 Posted December 5, 2008 Hi all thanks for your input. I know it is about changing your habits. I am working on this!!! Kim
RestlessMonkey 7 Posted December 5, 2008 They say you shouldn't drink while you eat, not that you can't. I still takes sips while I eat. My surgeon was quite explicit...DO NOT DRINK while eating. It wasn't a general guideline or suggestion, but a rule. Drinking while eating can 1. help food flow through more quickly, thus negating the effect of the band or 2. hang in the top portion of your stomach and stretch out your pouch. Do what your surgeon tells you! :tongue2:
gentylwind 1 Posted December 5, 2008 Mine was very very very explicit about this too, as was my dietician. NO drinking while eating, PERIOD. The key is to keep drinking when you are allowed to. If you stay hydrated, not drinking while eating becomes easier. And as the poster said above, you just don't do it, and it becomes habit. I was a little lucky, in that my mother never drank during meals, so I already knew it was possible. But I too thought I would never be able to do it. I am doing just fine with it now. Keep practicing and before you know it you just won't crave fluids during meals anymore. And be sure you get your 8-10 glasses in between meals, making note of how long before and after meals you are supposed to not drink.
*slim* 2 Posted December 5, 2008 Something that has helped me to stop drinking while eating is to simply NOT have it there while eating. I know that seems simplistic, but it's the truth. Fix your plate and sit where ever you normally would, but don't fix yourself a glass of anything to go with it. I noticed that if it wasn't there, I didn't miss it. You reach for the glass out of habit because you have it available to you. I have also requested that I not be given Water on the table when out to eat. It's a small thing that has really helped. Good luck to you.
TQUAD64 9 Posted December 5, 2008 Well, I don't have any fluids near me when I am eating. Before, I would have a bottle Water or if at a restraunt, I would have a glass of water. Not any more. I stay away from the fluids while eating.
orea15 0 Posted December 6, 2008 Hydrate well beforehand so you aren't so thirsty as you eat. Then, keep your darn glass off the table! You will get used to it, but you have to keep working at following those rules. (This one was easy for me compared to eating slower! LOL)
Annie0341 0 Posted December 7, 2008 I am preparing my self for this new way of life as well. I was given strict instructions to only drink an hour before and an hour after so the food isn't washed right thru making you hungry sooner. Gosh I know I won't want that!
