New to Diabetes and Lap Band

Recommended Posts

Thanks. I go to my doc this Wed and have made an apt with the dietician for the same day. Don't think I'm doing anything wrong, but if so, she should be able to help me out. Several people have mentioned that perhaps the stress of having surgery was affecting my diabetes. Since the surgery was in November, I don't know. Just very disappointed. Really expected to be going down in meds... not getting on insulin and now 2 types of insulin. Don't know how you can lose when on insulin. Always thought it caused weight gain. Oh well, it is what it is and I guess I'll find out more on Wed.

had diabetes, four pills a day and four shots a day for almost two years...had the surgery on Dec 16th and haven't had any diabetes meds since then! not one little drop!! I actually made my doctor cry when she did my A1C and for the second time since surgery it came back totally normal!

Good luck!

by the way - i also no longe rneed to take my high blood pressure meds...

I am down 30 pounds, approximately 8 inches, and two (almost three) pants sizes.

I feel great!

Congratulations! You are doing great! My doc took me off the night time insulin... it wasn't doing enough anyway... and put me on metformin.. you aren't supposed to gain weight on that one I'm told. Still have to take a sliding scale insulin shot in the morning, but the rests of the time I'm great. Am down 40 lbs and 3 sizes at this point. Haven't hit my sweet spot yet for the fills, but hopefully will soon. Going to my regular doc this month.. and he'll do blood tests..Will find out how my a1c is at that point and go from there. Keep it up! You're doing great!

Hi all. I haven't had surgery yet, should get my surg date on 4/23. My Dr. told me I should be able to get off my Diabetic meds but that once you are a diabetic you always will be one. I will have to continue to monitor my blood surgar always but that with proper diet and exercise I should be fine. I'm really going to try to make it fine! good luck to all...bb

You all are so inspirational! I will be banded in early May and SOOOO hoping to get rid of my diabetes meds. I take 2000 mg dailly of metformin and 8mg of glimiperide. My last a1c was 8.0, so I have alot of work to do, but reading what you have experienced is very uplifting for me. Good job everyone!

Sherri, I have a surgery date of May 15. I also hope and pray to be rid of my diabetes.I take actomet and glyburide. Seems like lapband is very helpful for diabetics. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

BMooney, It will be so awesome if we can lose our meds too. I don't have my date yet - will get it on 4/29 when I have my pre-op orientation day - and am hoping it will be the first week of May.

Stay in touch and let me know how you're doing!

I was on a diabetic diet 'til June '08 when I began type II diabetic. That was a real wake up call for me!! Was on 1000 mg of Metformin in am and 500 in PM. I gained weight and started periods after 12 months without.

I stopped taking Metfomin a few days before surgery at my surgeon's request (I was banded 11/18)...haven't taken it since. My A1C has been 100 or less. I've had two tests since banding.

The only meds I'm on now is 20mg of Zocor but have a family history of high chlorestrol. I'm down 44.5 and exercise at least 5days a week.

My PCP told me once a diabetic, always a diabetic BUT I'll take being a med free diabetic any day!!

Good luck!

Congrats on your weight loss and getting rid of your diabetes meds! Metformin is some nasty crap, isn't it?? Twice a day, I take 1000 mg of it, and now I just think "Hopefully in a few weeks, I won't need this anymore!"

Thanks for the information and encouragement!

Good news EVERYONE, I am not banded yet but, hope to be soon. I have had diabetes for 19 years and am on 4 different meds for it. My last AIC was almost 12. I am praying this will help me get my AIC down.My Dr does not guarantee it though because I have been a diabetic so long. How long have you had diabetes, the ones that are off meds?Good Luck to everyone.
