I am a diabetic on an oral med and am wondering about diabetic life after the surgery. I know how bad I can feel if I don't get enough to eat or can't eat on time, how does the surgery affect this and how can I take my pills if I am not allowed to take pills?? Someone please give me their experience! :whatchutalkingabout

I am a diabetic about 3-1/2 months out from my banding. My need for diabetes meds has been drastically reduced due to the weight loss. I was on maximum doses of metaformin, avandia, amaryl, and byetta. Now, I'm completely off amaryl and byetta and my avandia doseage has been cut in half. I got better blood sugar control now than I've ever had since being dianosed. Some banders eventually get completely off of their meds.

You will be able to swallow pills after surgery, they just need to be small in size. This means that you may need to get a pill cutter or have smaller dose pills prescribed. There's no real problem with getting the medicine that you need inside of you. Overall, you should see a marked improvement in your type II diabetes.

I hope that helps.

Like Bryan, I was on a lot of meds for my diabetes. Metformin, avandia, humilin and lantis (insulins). Each time I went to the doctor, he cut dosages. First the insulins, then the pills. It has been three months since I've been off ALL diabetes meds and my sugar levels are in the high 80 and low 90's. I am also off all my blood pressure meds.

Thank you Bryan and Kari!! Along with losing weight one of the best benefits of getting the Lapband is getting healthy. I am hoping to also cut down or get rid of most or all of my meds, high blood pressure-migraines-GERD, but I have read that you cannot take any pills for quite a while after surgery, so thanks for saying that you can, that makes me feel better! :tongue2: Hoping to one day be diabetes free..........
