trayrenee 0 Posted December 4, 2008 I'm 2 weeks out -- started mushies yesterday. My food list says I can eat some crackers. I had one round melba toast -- big mistake!:cursing: It's like a golf ball in my chest. Do I just wait it out? Should I drink something or will that just back up more. So what exactly is going on -- is it not going through my band? Or is it too complex for my stomach to process? One piece of melba toast -- I was wondering while putting it in my mouth -- I was thinking -- "Boy this is pretty dry"
rodriguezequal 3 Posted December 4, 2008 I haven't gotten "stuck" yet, but everyone has told me DO NOT DRINK ANYTHING!!! They said that it is very painful to drink while you are stuck...during my mushies I would have a few well chewed saltines...I think at this point your only option is to bring it back up and get rid of it...it's stuck above the entrance to your stomach so it is covering the hole that allows things to pass...sorry that I can't be of more help
sistasassy 6 Posted December 4, 2008 Give it some time. The first thing I had get stuck was a bite of Jello cake and whipped cream. I thought I would die. I just continued to breathe (as long as you are breathing, you are in good shape) and tried to relax. I also sort of rubbed the center of my chest and sort of worked on trying to burp. That helped me. BUT, if you are still stuck in a few hours, I would call the doctor.
cookienay 0 Posted December 4, 2008 two weeks out and melba toast/crackers??? that sounds pretty advanced to me. My advice- don't drink! Get up walk around, take a hot shower (that always helps me). It will either go down or come up- but you will be miserable in the meantime. When it does, stick with liquids for 48 hours as your stoma is probably pretty swollen. If it does not resolve in a couple of hours you may need to contact your surgeon- or whatever they have you do at 1 in the morning. though I do not wish to contradict what your surgeon says, being more conservative could not hurt. My surgery center's protocol was liquids for 2 weeks, mushies 2 weeks, then regular foods as tolerated. And crackers were not on our mushies list. I will be online for a little while longer if you want to PM or ask anything else. Let us know how it goes!! Good luck.
trayrenee 0 Posted December 4, 2008 Thanks everyone! It went away in about 30 minutes. I caught it early. I was eating on slowly to see how it would work. It's still a little sore but it definately passed. Good to know though about the drinking. My diet was this: Week 1: Thin Clear Liquids Week 2: Protein liquid diet Week 3: Mushies and some very soft fish Week 4: Modified regular diet Weeks 5-8: Add a few foods every week I too thought crackers seemed extreme at Week 3 :cursing:-- but I figured I'd try it. OH well -- something else for my husband to eat.
rodriguezequal 3 Posted December 4, 2008 My post op diet was 1 week liquid diet then 1 week mushies and then after that gradually add in regular food...I was allowed saltines and stuff during my mushies and I eat them still pretty often with no problem at all...however I don't eat them by themselves..I usually put tuna or cheese on them...everyone is different and you really just have to figure out what works and what doesn't work for you...you'll get there...if you have concerns about things that are in your diet then call your surgeon...they're there to help! cookienay 0 Posted December 5, 2008 glad it passed without too much trouble. Good luck!
LSF 264 Posted December 5, 2008 I had the same surgery date as you and I just started soft food! I take each item slowly to see how I'm going to react. The only problem is, I can only eat a small amout in 1 sitting so I keep finding myself eating something every hour - 90 minutes. I might have a yogurt, then later a cheese stick. Or a 3oz pudding. I will not try crackers yet (even though I'm dying for one) because I'm too scared (might not be such a bad thing).
