What happens when you've over eaten?

Recommended Posts

I'm almost 2 weeks post op, banded on the 20th and last night, I allowed myself to get too hungry. By the time I sat down to eat dinner (at Logan's) I ate 2 rolls, a few chips, 3 fries and not quite half of a cheeseburger and I thought I was going to explode! Granted before being banded, that would have been an appetizer! but I'm guessing and looking for some validation, that because I ate too much for one, it irritated my diaphragm which in turn made the horrible sharp shoulder pain come back and two, i'm still feeling this slight "heaviness" in my chest and back (i'm guessing where the band is now) but I'm not sure what is causing this feeling because the food should be passed through my stomach by now. Does this sound normal to anyone and also, what kind of problems can be caused by overeating, as far as long term problems like slipping, etc??? I've learned my lesson for sure but just want to make sure nothing is wrong now. :cursing:

At two week post op I was still on Clear Liquids. Then it was on to mushies for a week then a soft diet for 4 weeks. Why are you eating a full solid meal so soon? Does your doctor allow this? You are still healing and so is the band and your stomach. That much food probably irritated the band and you might still have some swelling. You should follow your doctor's guidelines for food or call your nutritionist. It sounds like you did too much too soon. Good luck.

You should probably not be eating solid foods yet. Better call your doctor. He may want to do an Xray and see if you damaged the placement of your band. I would go back to liquids only for several days at the least and let your physician and nutritionist tell you where to go from there. I am also just two weeks out and can't have anything more solid than runny mashed potatoes, which is true for most people postop. Some are even still on just liquids at this stage, as mentioned above. Your band is still healing and the churning that regular digestion can cause along with overeating could pop stitches and cause your band to slip. You are probably fine, but you definitely need to talk to your doctor, especially since you are now not feeling very well.

Wow, yeah, sounds like way too much and way too soon! I agree, if you can still feel it today, you might want to give your doctor a call. Something may be amiss with the band.

you may not know for while if any damage has been done to create a slip - even after getting checked right now. that's sorta the fickleness of the band - there is no set template on how it functions for any 2 alike.

a slip can show up anytime - your best bet is to follow your post op diet as prescribed by your doctor.

as far as your question "what happens when you've over eaten" - i've done this once or twice. your just stuffed, and i didn't pay attention to my triggers that i have eaten plenty...ie - my nose will run or i get a hiccup. still a yr out i measure my meals out - i know how much will satisfy me, my worst problems are when dining out & it's been those times where i ate too much.

I was banded on 11/10/08 and just last week was allowed to have soft food. I'm sure the food you ate, irriated your stomach. Did your doctor or diatician tell you you could eat those foods?

My husband was banded on 09/29/08 and he has eaten too fast and been sick.

Wow! Your doctor let you progress to solid foods quickly. I was on full liquids for two weeks and right now I am on the mushie stage. I was banded on 11/11/08.

I have to echo what the others said. I was banded on November 17th and was on clear liquids for a week, then full liquids for a week, and only this week was progressed to soft/mushy food. Next week I get to start eating solid food--BUT I am to introduce things slowly to see how I tolerate them, and I am supposed to avoid pork and beef for at least two months. It sounds to me like you ate way too much and the wrong type of food for the stage of recovery you are in. I would think that even if your doctor had advanced you to solid foods so quickly it wouldn't be advisable to try so many different types at once.

You should definitely discuss things with your doctor if you are worried.

This is entirely too much food way too soon if you are less than two weeks out . . . and you culd be jeopardizing your band. Also rolls, cheeseburger, fries, chips are not healthy choices for bandsters. There is almost no nutritional value to these . . . and if you are eating limited quantities, your food choices should be nutritionally beneficial.

Even if your doctor approved you to go on solids this early, foods should be band friendly choices. If you are in pain, go back to liquids/soups/mushies, etc. If you are not following your post-op diet plan, you should get back on it as soon as possible.

What are you doing eating a freaking cheeseburger and fries when you're supposed to be losing weight? Didn't you take any notice at all of the nutritionist? You really do need to take a good long look at yourself if your weight loss journey is to be a success. You need to encompass a change of lifestyle if the band is to stand a chance of working for you. I'm not talking about the amount of food you can eat, but eating healthily.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
