Anyone from New York City (NYC)

(Put in both NYC and spelled it out for searching purposes.)

I am scheduled for surgery December 29 in Juarez, Mexico with Dr. Jose Rodriguez. Provided my kidneys aren't taken and sold....

Who's out there from NYC? Have any of you had your surgery elsewhere and then had aftercare in NYC? Who did you use? Are there any doctors that offer a package for aftercare, or do you have to pay for each follow up visit / procedure / fill separately? I don't understand why I'm having trouble finding a package deal, when surgery is done like that and it'd give docs such a huge profit margin. I'd love to find a doc who uses the model I'm talking about.

And I'd also just try to connect with some other NYers who have either gotten the band or are about to get the band.

Hi, I'm in the 'burbs but went to Weill Cornell for my surgery. You might want to check with Dr. Pomp who is the Chief of Bariatric Surgery and who I happen to like very much.

In as much as we like to think of our doctors as mini-miracle workers, they are all still in business. It just happens to be that their business is medicine.

Good luck and protect those kidneys.:tt1:.

I had my surgery with Dr. Rumbaut in Monterrey (loved him -- very good experience) and do my follow-up with Dr. Ren at NYU. They have a relationship with Dr. R, so I was able to make my first follow-up appointment before I had my surgery.

My insurance (Blue Cross Blue Shield) pays for my follow-up appointments (despite that I did not go through them for my surgery). So, I pay the co-pay and that's it.

Hope that helps! Drs. Ren and Fielding at NYU have a great reputation and I've been very happy with them. You may see if your doctor can connect you with them.

If you are worried about your doctor (not sure if you were just 100% kidding), consider giving Dr. Rumbaut a call. I have photos of the hospital on my blog & info re my experience on there if you are interested.

Catherine

I'm from NYC and my surgeon is Dr. Ferzli. He holds 6 patents on laparoscopic surgery and has been on NY Magazine's top surgeon list for 12 years. He has offices in Staten Island and Brooklyn and does fills at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn. He is FANTASTIC.

I had surgery at NYU with Dr. Fielding and I know they do aftercare for people who've had surgery out of the country. The office is busy but it's worth it to be able to take advantage of their vast experience.

I was banded at NYU, like many others here. Dr. Fielding has said many times (at support meetings and info sessions) that he supports anyone who wants the band, and if having it in Mexico is your best option he will do follow-up care in their office.

I would contact them to find out the particulars, but I love it there. Everyone in the office is so friendly and helpful. The place is busy but its nice to talk to people in the waiting room.

I have the nurse practitioner there do my fills and such and he is an absolute gem.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
