One year later and still losing......

Recommended Posts

Hi,,,I am from Kentucky. I had the lapband surgery one year ago and am still losing. It has slowed down a lot but as long as the weight is still coming off, I'm happy. I have lost from 214 to 150 in one year. I go and get a fill every 8-10 weeks. I will have my 4th fill on December 23rd. I started out wearing a size 18 jeans and now I am in a size 9-10. I do not regret one minute of the surgery. I am 52 years old, so losing has been slower for me because of my metabolic age. I have severe arthritis and do not exercise as much as I should. When it gets close time for another fill I start getting hungry. I had my surgery in Ashland, Kentucky at Kings Daughters Hospital. Would love to hear from someone. My e-mail is llowe1956@yahoo.com

I could tell very little restriction on the first fill. But the second one I could really tell the difference. I lost 23 pounds in two months to start out. My doctor will only give a fill every 8-10 weeks. Thereafter it has been slower. THis last fill I got in September, 2008 and I still am restricted now. Today, I have only had one egg for Breakfast, a shredded salad for lunch and Protein drink for dinner and of course, plenty of Water. I do feel a lot better. I was on c-pap machine....no longer......Remember some things. Take your Vitamins, drink you Protein drinks, exercise and have a support group to attend. I live 3 hours away from a support group, but, there are 3 other people close to me that had the lap band and we all talk and help each other. It's kind of having our own support group.

P.S. Just a reminder. When you get you fill, you will be more restricted in the morning. My doctor says what happens is at night where you don't drink, your pouch becomes dry and when you try to eat in the morning it is more restricted. To alleviate this drink some sips of hot coffee, tea or whatever hot drink you like and wait 30 minutes and try to eat. It will help tremendous. I still do that or I couldn't eat at all in the morning. Good luck...and if you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Congratulations!! I also had my surgery at King's Daughters in October 07. My success hasn't been quite as good as you, but I'm happy with my 60 less pounds. Was Dr Wheeler your surgeon? My email address is: displaceddiva@yahoo.com

Dr. Tompkins did my surgery on December 14, 2007. He is very strict on giving fills. He will only give one every 8-10 weeks and if you have lost too much he won't give one. I don't regret one minute of having the surgery.

Wow! What an inspiration you are!! I was banded 11/11 and have lost 17 lbs to date (been holding here for a week), and that includes the loss from pre-op diet. I too am 52 years old, so I have that slower metabolism happening. Oh well, not a problem cause I LOVE MY BAND and would do it over again in a second! I go back to my surgeon in two more weeks and doubt I will get a fill if I am still losing on my own. You can send me a private message and I will give you my e-mail address. I would love to stay in contact with you.... we can help each other stay focused!

I now have 4cc in a 10cc band. I'm really at my sweet spot right now and love it. I can eat nearly anything in small amounts. My problem is ice cream!! I eat some every night. If I'd give it up I'd lose more. I'm currently a size 14 which doesnt sound all that great, but coming froma size 22, I'm happy.

You are right. I have been there several times and I found that the ice cream did prevent the weight loss. And, yes coming from a size 22 to a size 14 is great...I was in an 18 and now in 9-10. I can tell I have gained maybe a pound in the last two weeks. I think because of the ice cream. I have promised myself to do better starting tomorrow and give up the ice cream. That has always been my weakness. Good Luck

dont give up ice cream altogether, but have the light ice cream and only have a half a cup. That way you still have a nice treat. :cursing:

Just wondering if you go to any support groups? I'm 2 hours away from Ashland and am thinking about starting my own group here. Just wondering if/where you meet and does it help?

I live three hours away from Ashland too. That is a little too far to go. I have 4 other girls in my neighborhood that had the surgery including my sister. We all talk on the phone and at each others house. We all had our surgery at different times. It helps a lot to talk to other people and share recipes also. I use injury and have learned alot of new ways to fix it. It does seem to get tiring after using for a year.......As far as the ice cream. I have tried the sugar free and light. I usually blend it with my injury and it makes it like a milkshake....Blue Bunny makes the best tasting sugar free and light.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
