Have date for surgery and questions ?

Recommended Posts

I have my date for surgery but have lots of questions about what to expect post-op.

I have a desk job and was wondering how long it would be to return to work? What the pain is afterwards?

My surgery is scheduled for Jan 8, 2009 and I go back to weigh in before surgery on Dec 19,2008. I was on a diet before I saw my doctor to schedule my surgery and lost 9 lbs but since Thanksgiving I have probably gained it back. I'm having problems with the diet here during the holidays. Does anyone have any suggestions?:cursing:

Hang in there, I got my band on the 25th of Nov. and am still recovering. I had to be on the liquids for 2 weeks I used the Edge carb advantage Protein Drinks because they were bigger and more filling also had lots of broth and tea. When I was starving I made Jello added about a cup of extra cold Water and drank it down and it was very filling. I'm proud to say that in 2 weeks my only cheat was eating 1/4 of a sauteed mushroom.

Recovery has been a little harder than I expected, I stayed on phenegren and pain pills for about 3 days, I was able to eat some Soup yesterday. The worst part for me has been the shoulder pain I don't know what causes it. they say it is normal it hurts way more than my stomach. I'm feeling almost normal again and plan to go back to my sedentary job on Tuesday. Good luck with your procedure

Hi, I was banded on 11/11/08 and went back to work on 11/24/08. My doctor told me I could go back to work anywhere from 1-2 weeks. I wanted 2-weeks off, just I could have some "Me Time" at home. So when I went back to my stationary job on the 24th I felt great. I was energized and was in the right frame of mind.

I ended up staying in the hospital for 2.5 days. It was hard managing my pain, because I have a hard time tolerating pain meds. I wore an anti-nausea patch for several days, which helped with the pains meds.

Once I was home, I took the prescribed liquid Loritab. This worked well. I slept a lot and walked a lot. The gas pain hurt, but was managed with pain meds and walking.

I felt great on day 7 post-op and was driving and shopping.

Good luck!

Hey I am also getting my band on the 8th of January. Are you from NC? For the shoulder pain I hear that is from gas. This will go away in a few days. Congrats! to everyone and let us bring in the new year right.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
