how do you deal with lap band and going to school?

Recommended Posts

i will be having my surgery hopefully by the end of December and i was wondering how people deal with having the lap-band around school. Also i'm not sure if i should tell no one about it or everyone. Or only the ones that count. The only reason why i don't want everyone to know is because i don't think they would understand.I have told my best friend and most family...what should i do?

Honestly, i eat like a normal person - well a normal person that eats healthy. Nobody would know I was banded if I didnt tell them. I can pretty much eat anything put in front of me if I have to and can easily buy foods that I can eat when out and about or pack a lunch that is quite normal.

I just finished all my classes for the 3-year Masters program I am in, but have to submit my thesis to officially graduate. I also work full time and was banded on 11/11/08. I plan ahead. I informed professors that I would be recovering from surgery, but did not disclose the medical issue.

This is not the first time I have had surgery while in school, so every time I had a surgery while in school, I informed my professors. (I never disclosed the medical issue) I asked for assignments ahead of time. I e-mailed assignments back to professors and I recovered while doing homework and reading assignments. It is not easy but it can be done.

For work, I took two weeks off as vacation and did not disclose that I was having surgery. It really is a personal decision whether to tell or not to tell. My friends, co-workers and family do not know that I am banded.

However, I did tell my sister, just in case something happened during the surgery. In that way, my sister could help my adult children just in case something went wrong during the surgery.

Good luck!
