Traveling tips?

Recommended Posts

Not to brag (OK maybe a little), but I am scheduled to travel for business Dec 6. I have travelled since my band but not anywhere this far. I am going to HAWAII!!!

I will be in planes/airports for 14 hours. On the planes they sell sandwiches and chips. I have looked in food courts in airports and most of the places are not ideal. I really am surprised how much our culture revolves around bread. Anyway, I am wondering on food choices and what to pack. I don't think I can take Protein Drinks with me in the carry-on. Also not sure how to get exercise in while I am gone. Any ideas?

First off, I hate you! JK! I have never been to Hawaii, how fun!

I just spent this last week traveling and found it pretty easy in the airport to get something that I could eat. I found a Quiznos and had them grill some chicken with swiss for me, that was pretty good. There is usually some place that makes burritos, you could eat the filling. Most of the salads are huge, but I have had a side salad and asked for a grilled chicken breast.

You just have to be creative and ask for what you know you can eat. I really have not had too many problems in restaurants ordering. I just tell them what I need and it usually works out great. Sometimes the hotel will offer a Breakfast, and they usually have oatmeal, that seems to really work well for me in the morning. You could bring plain Protein powder to add to your meals, that will ensure that you get your Protein in. Just don't forget your Water, I made sure to get one before each flight, so I had something on the plane.

Hope that helps a little, have fun on your trip! I wish I could go somewhere warm and sunny!

Wow - Hawaii (can you pack me?)

Traveling can be hard, but I also ask for everything minus the bread. I packed a small cooler bag and put cheese, beef Jerky, Protein bar and a piece of fruit. This worked out well for me.

Have fun!

I have done a fair amount of travel since being banded. I usually make sure my carry on or purse contains the following items: 1.5oz beef Jerky snack packs...25g Protein, 140 cals....works as a meal in a pinch. Low fat cheese sticks Pure protein bar...purchase at Walmart Most hotels provide a continental Breakfast. Some have hard boiled eggs (cannot do them), Fiber Cereal, oatmeal, etc. I have found that airport food is a challenge for me. Especially deli type meat that my band does not allow me to have. Enjoy your trip!!!!!!!!!!

Packing your own food is pretty easy, as long as you remember to not pack any liquids or semi-liquids (I saw some apparently very dangerous yogurt confiscated at the security checkpoint).

I usually pack some low-fat lunch meats and cheeses to roll up and snack on. I'll usually have a Protein bar on hand, but I try to stay away from them since even the "low-carb" varieties seem to have 20-30 grams of carbohydrates. I usually carry my food in a soft insulated lunch box, since this doesn't count as either your 1 carry-on, or your "personal item", since you're planning on consuming it on the plane.

I just got back from a 10 day trip to Seattle, and it sure was nice to not be packed into an airplane seat, and to not have the tray table in contact with my belly. It was a very different experience not being so cramped.

You could also put some Cereal in a baggie. They have milk on the plane for coffee so you could probably get a coffee cup half full of low fat milk and eat the cereal with it. Good luck and have a great time; I was fortunate enough to win a trip to Hawaii once and it was a memory I cherish.

You will love flying, I loved the fact that I fit in the seat and could put the tray down and it was not propped on my stomach, I actually was able to pull it out to use it - pretty darn cool!

The insulated lunch box should keep it cool. You could even get one of the insulated lunch bags, they are pretty collapsable and could fit in your purse or carry on.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
