Thinking about getting banded

Recommended Posts

hi all,

i'm really interested in getting the lap band surgery. i wanted to get feedback from people who have actually got the surgery to see how painful it is, how much you have lost in how much time etc. if you could let me know it would be much appreciated as i'm thinking of getting it done really soon.

I lost 22 lbs on the post op diet but after that it was slow going. Some people lose very quickly, and others it's slower, but it's heading in the right direction.

I didn't have much pain at all. Somebody told me that is because I was exercising so much before surgery. There are some people that do have some pain the first few days after surgery, but most people don't complain about a lot of pain.

It took me 16 months to get to goal.

I had my surgery yesterday. Only pain so far and not bad it a little bit of the gas stuck under my left shoulder. I can tell I had surgery but doesn't hurt much at all. I would do it again in a heart beat. I lost 25 pounds since June 24th and another 10 pounds the week before surgery. Good luck with your jorney. It's well worth it in my eyes.

hi all,

I was banded on 11/11/08. I was 251 pre-op and I am now 228 post. I lost 12 pounds post op and the rest came off during the pre-op diets. I have lost lots of inches too. I am focusing in on inches, because you can get frustrated by the scale when the numbers don't go down.

As far as pain, yes I was in pain, which was managed by pain meds. I stayed in the hospital for 2.5 days, because of pain management issues. While at home recovering, I had the normal issues gas, diarreah, and some soreness. I felt normal by day 7 and was driving and shopping by day 7.

I went back to work on 11/24/08 and I am glad I scheduled 2-weeks off from work. For me, this was just the right amount of time off for my recovery. However, there are people on this forum who go back to work sooner.

Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
