Getting my band 12-9-08

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody, I am getting my band on 12/9 two weeks from today. I am a little nervous about the band, I have read forums like this one but what can I expect after the band. I just weighed in at 487lbs I am 6'1" tall, and I have been over weight all my life. I understand that the band is just a tool to help me loose and keep the weight off. How long before you start to see the weight come off, and what can I expect each month. My other concerns are the surgery it's self, how long before your back to work or able to move around. I have had my gallbladder removed in 2006, and I was only down two days. Can I expect about the same from the banding. Any information would be great, thanks.

Hi 91vert! Welcome. I'm 9 weeks post-op so I can answer a few of your questions. The biggest lesson I have learned from being on lapbandtalk.com is that everyone's (and I do mean everyone's) experience is different. Some people are back to work in 2 days but it depends on what type of work you do. I have a computer job but I still took 7 days off work. Some people suffer from gas pains after surgery but I had none. So while it is interesting to hear about other people's experiences, you really don't know where in the continium you'll fall. I can tell you for me, the experience has been great. The weight started coming off with the pre-op liquid diet and has been slow and steady ever since. The general rule of thumb is that with the lap band you can expect to loose 1 -2 pounds a week. But you'll loose more at the start, of course.

Good luck and I hope the surgery and post-op go smoothly and uneventfully for you.

91vert Congratulation on your upcoming surgery! This is site is going to be your support during your journey! Remember to use it! As far as asking questions about weight loss you will learn that everyone is very different. Don't ever let your experience be reflected upon what others may experience. There are slow loser, fast loser, and people that wish they have never gotten the band. Your journey will be JUST YOUR OWN. Don't use others to define your path let them help you along it. Your body and your dedication to healthy eating and exercising will guide you. Having said all that, WOW only 2 days down with gallbladder surgery. Everyone I know had a hard time with that one. I think lap band is a walk in the park compared to that. I think you are going to do GREAT! Don't make yourself nervous over it, be excited to start your new life. I will be thinking and praying for you on the 9th, please let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the quick reply Marie715, I too have an office job, so I praying for a quick recovery. I am also paying cash for my surgery, so that leaves me short for Christmas, so the sooner I can get back to work the better. I will also post day to day on how the surgery went and my experience with the recovery and weight loss. It took over a year to talk myself into this, but now the day is coming, and soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
