Heather: My doc doesn't want us to go to the gym or at least lift weights for 6 months. I can do hand weights, not over 10 lbs and walk, or treadmill or exercise bike... that's it for now. It's weird how every doc has his own set of rules isn't it? Good luck and get to that gym!

I think it's about the doctor's preference and your weight and age before surgery to how long and how much and when you get to start lifting. My exercise regiment is focused on cardio for the first 6 months. I can lift anything less than 25 pounds and that's over head. But with as little as I'm eating the 30 minutes of cardio is burning the fat. I find it difficult to set loss goals because I'm losing more weight faster than I ever did on anything I tried pre surgery. I do want to be realistic but so far I'm losing an average of 5 pounds a week. This still am easy but at least I don't dread those weigh in's at my doctor and run away from the camera at family get togethers.

I've lost 25 pounds in the first 3 weeks... feel like it's going to slow down soon. Question for you'll... I have never lifted weights... what type of hand exercises can I do that will tighten up my bat wings... where the skin is loose under your upper arms? Want to get ahead on this before things get totally out of control.

Trish I know what you mean I dont want that to get out of control !! Yes use weights to tone the under side of your arms . Push ups help to !! If you can't kneel on the ground I went to a rehab facility as part as my pre op pre requisites and they said do them in up against the wall.

She's exactly right. Did you doctor give you any rubber resistance bands to use? If you attach the knot to the top of the door and then pull down with you hands together like your closing your house window, that will help the top side on your forearm and also those bat wings as you call it.

My surgeon told me no weights or ab exercises for 6 weeks. He said that area needs to heal. I have Tony Little's Gazelle and wanted to begin using it since I'll be 4 weeks out tomorrow....Can you believe it 11/18 bandsters???? He told me no 'til after he sees me 12/29. He is allowing me to do my Walk Away The Pounds tapes as long as I don't do any AB exercises. I also had a hernia repaired during surgery.

The treadmill is so boring to me...even if it's in front of the tv in the basement. I've been stuck at 22lbs and hope it starts up again soon. Tomorrow I start real food....I'm elated and nervous at the same time...how does everyone else feel?:)

My doc told me not to do heavy weights for 6 months. I can do light weights... I just don't know what movement will help tone my bat wings on my arms... And I'm doing the treadmill and the exercise bikes and stairs...

The physical specialist they have told me none of my physical therapy abdominal exercises for 4-6 weeks because they are way too strenuous. At my two week post-op visit, my surgeon said if it doesn't hurt me it doesn't hurt him!! He told me I could do anything! I wonder how much expertise some surgeons have over and above the actual surgery! The co-surgeon says eat only meat, poultry, fish and vegetables that grow above

the ground for the first year! He has had the lapband surgery and I guess that is how he lost 100 pounds. The nutritionist they hired to advise their patients said to consult with him on any advise the Dr's give!!

Wow makes sense .. so is that fresh veggies or does frozen count also? I'm treating to eat FRESH FRESH FRESH but I can tell you for the winter it's going to be EXPENSIVE.

I doubt he cares so much if they are fresh or frozen veggies. His main point is to be sure one eats no veggies that grow under the ground such as potatoes, yams, carrots, beets and such.

I know what you mean. I have noticed that I'm really hungry about meal time and I eat more than what is 2 - 3 oz. But once I'm done eating it's great the hunger goes away.

I can't wait till I can do some strength exercising. I agree the treadmill is boring to me. I got on a nu step yesterday which is basically an elyptic trainer but you sit down and it was a bit more interesting, but I miss using my bowflex. Yep 1 month from today, and I think it's amazing that I got used to this new way of life. Only thing I having is major Constipation. Are you people experiencing the same thing and what are you doing to regulate your bms?:huh2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
