optifast vs optislim or others

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I'm on day 1 of my 14 day pre op diet and I'm already struggling (I am so hungry I feel sick and I'm already grumpy lol). My dietician said to have Optifast 3 times a day and add in a couple of cups of vegies. He did say Optislim would be ok too. I bought some optifast but its really expensive and not that nice.

I'm just wondering if any of the others are any better? Any hints for getting through the next 2 weeks would be great too.

Thanks

Lisa

hey Lisa

i was put on Kicstart which is like Optifast i guess. I dont like the taste either but i was told to add Diet Flavoured Topping to change the taste. This helped immensly as I too doubt i wouldve done real well having to drink something which tastes YUK

hope this helps a little , but stick with it youll be suprised at how effective they are

cheers

Hi Guys

Thanks for talking about Optislim v Optifast I was wondering what people preferred. My daughter is usint Optislim (not for banding reasons) and the chemist told her that Optislim has more sugar in in and tasted better where Optifast was the more rigid form. My Dr told me that we could also have Dr Mcleods which is the same kind of thing but I don't know where you find it.

Anyway if you have any other ways of making the shakes taste better please let me know as I have to start on the 13th and I am not looking forward to it as I will be as grumpy as all hell.

Hi All,

I rang my my clinic when I was trying to decide what to buy Optifast or Optislim. They were very adament that Optifast was better. I tried arguing with them for my wallets sake, but they didnt budge and said for better results use the Optifast.... which I did. And I hated it, thought it was VILE!!!

Am sooo thoroughly thankful I dont have to touch any of that crap anymore!

I think Choice did a survery on this recently and most of the cheaper ones are complete rubbish - they are low calorie junk, full of artificial sweetener.

You only have to taste them - have you ever had a Celebrity Slim or Tony Ferguson shake? Ick, they are sooooooo sweet.

Optifast is medically designed for the type of circumstance in which it is being prescribed, fast weight loss in the short term without going short nutritionally. I think Optislim is not too bad a substitute but the rest are commercial knock offs for the more general market. You really are better to stick with it. But if one of the others is all you can bear, then that's what you'd do I guess, but I'd check with my doctor.

My advice, add ice and blend it up. I found it tasted A LOT better ice cold. Also you can almost convince yourself that the coffee flavour is an iced coffee!

Hi Sarah! I thought that no one else had a 4cc fill at the time of surgery and then I came accross you! I dont know if you were told the same but i was told over and over again that you dont get your first fill till 4-6 weeks?! Did they tell you why they put that much at the time of surgery?

Hope your weight loss is going well!))))))))

Thought I would put my two cents in.

Optifast is very, well, non fun!!!

I personally liked the coffee flavour the bestest out of the lot. I really didn't enjoy the Soups, had to add a lot of salt and pepper to make it tasty. The bars are quite nice, but leave you very dry mouthed, hence more Water needed to be drunk (which isn't a bad thing).

Good luck and keep going with the shakes. It will be all over soon.

I start my pre op diet on 21st April for my op on 5th May. I asked my dietician about Optislim vs Optifast and she said the OF was the recommended one. I told her that I could buy 2 boxes of OS for $55 and she said go for it- it didn't really matter too much. It's only to slim down the liver so that the op can go ahead. Well I'm going to buy the OS anyway! Optifast is American where Optislim is Australian.

The only flavour I liked was the strawberry , I used to put ice and real strawberries in it and blend it up , it was yummie ..I had a bar for lunch as I felt like I wanted something to chew... I was lucky only to have to do it for 9 days....

Hang in you will do it....and you will kick start the weight loss too...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
