I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be banded in January '09. One of my favorite foods is sushi. I know that everyone is different, but I was interested in finding out how other sushi lovers out there are making out with being banded and swallowing, not only the rice, but the seaweed wraps? Any insight will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I dont think sushi will be on your diet if you are looking to loose weight. Also, the rice can ball up and cause you to throw up. Rice, potatoes are difficult. They are high in starch and carbohydrates, so I would stay away from them for a long time until you are happy with your weight loss. Sushi is not very filling and you have to eat a whole lot to get satisfied. I gave up many things I loved to have weight loss success and to be more healthy. After I was off the liquids while my band was healing, I looked at eating healthy to loose weight and have a long disease free life. I wish you well !

Shishmi is with out rice and it is low in fat and high in Protein. I tend to eat the shishmi because rice is starchy. Now I have not tried it since the band. and since I am only post op 3 day, I know I will be upset if I can never eat sushi again!

Chew Chew Chew. I love sushi also, I was banded on 9/10 and have lost 35 lbs so far and I eat sushi at least once a week. Sushi is high in protien and IS good for you. I can eat about 6 pieces of a roll and I am full and more importantly satisfied. Just remember to chew well! Good Luck!!!

Yeah, anyone who thinks sushi is fattening doesn't know sushi! I don't know yet if I will be able to tolerate it (just 2 days postop here) but I sure hope so!

Thanks to all who replied. I know sushi is good for you, high in protien and low in fat!! (unfortunately the rice part = carbs) I wish I could say that is why I love it so much, but it is not....It just tastes so darn good. Best of luck to everyone!

A lot of places here in Hawaii let you order sushi or sasahimi witn a 'no carb' option. They put shredded daikon in instead. I order that option with chirashi bowls as well.

I can live on sushi, or just raw fish and vegetables, so giving that up is not an option for me. That's one reason I chose a band. But you might want to go light on the wasabi. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
