Spicy Foods...A No No?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what peoples exeriences have been with spicy foods. I will be having lapband suregery in January. Being Mexican and East Indian, I was raised on spicy foods. I eat everyday soming with either curry or chiles in my food everyday. Am I to give this up for the rest of my life? I already have to give up coffee and my daily ration of diet pepsi......

Thank you.

You do need to ask your doctor and nutririonist, and I am only 10 days post-op, but I've spiced at least one thing every day since my third day post-op. I've used tabasco, wasabi, curry powders and lemongrass and everything's been fine with me!

Good luck, and I hope you don't have to give it up either.

Spicey foods never bothered me before the band and they still don't. I can basically eat everything I did before the band. Of coarse in smaller portions.

I LOVE spicy foods - especially Mexican food!!! I did not have to give it up.... I don't think I could have. Even when I was on the liquid phase of the post-op diet, I strained HOT salsa into my chicken and beef broth. It was much better that way. I was lucky - I did not have to give up coffee.... my doctor lets me have that. So I'm always wide awake and spicy... works for me. Good luck to you!!!! Becky

I have been craving super spicy items. I do think its my bodies way of replacing sweets and bad carbs. anyway. i havent had any issues eating even plain jalepenos. the spicier the better. I have had no band issues because of it. Some docs do have it on the no no list although im not completely sure why as long as its tolerated, it should be fine.

Thank you for aall the replies. It is good to know that my spicet foods might be tolerated.

One thing I realized I have been doing is dwelling on those things I am suppose to give up and forgetting the benefits I will get out of doing this.

I look forwart to living a long healthy life.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
