My first "challenge"

Recommended Posts

Well, I did have a Thanksgiving lunch at work last week but that was easy. No one paid attention to what I ate or drank. Last night, dh and I went out to dinner with some friends we regularly eat/drink with. Although my doctor said it's okay to drink alcohol in moderation, I have decided not to for now.

We arrived at the restaurant late and 3 of 4 people were already drinking (the 4th was the designated driver). One immediately started pushing me to order a drink and when I quietly said, "no", pushed again. About an hour later, he started pushing again. Of course, when he did this, everyone paid attention to me and the fact that I normally drink but wasn't. I halfway wondered if I should have bought a drink and taken a sip occasionally? Hmmm. These same people will be at a holiday get together with us on Dec. 13th.

I did well with dinner. Dh and I split a meatloaf order and he got a side and I did (creamed spinach). I drank lots of Water before eating and then quit.

You could do a couple of things.

1. get a drink (water) and have them put it in a cocktail glass with a stirrer straw, or in a wine glass.

2. tell them that you are on medication and you can't drink

3. tell them you are on a diet and etoh is off of your list

4. walk around with a drink in your hand but don't drink it (this might be too tempting for you)

5. Tell them to leave you alone!

I did think of that one! I'm actually on one (and have been for years) that states on the label not to drink alcohol with it!

I think it's easier in large group settings.

Anne - Good job on sticking to your guns!

I imagine Thanksgiving will be quite the test for all of us this week.

I've got Thanksgiving dinner at my parents' place on Thursday, a football get-together on Friday, and then an after-Thanksgiving thing at my sister-in-law's parents' place on Saturday. Yikes!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
