Protein Supplement shakes... any suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I gave up on the Protein shakes. I thought I could stomach the Max Protein but after nearly gagging while drinking one last night, and then burping it up all night, I realized that I cannot do that. I'm not even banded yet, I go in tomorrow.

So, today I went and got some of the protein bullets. I also tried the Isopure Fruit drinks. I tasted the bullets and the were great. I drank an Isopure and it was delicious, but it gave me cotton mouth something fierce. Then again, I chugged it in less than an hour, I would imagine sipping it slowly on ice would help with the cotton mouth. Also, after drinking, I was running around like a monkey on crack. I had more energy today than I've had in years. And I'm at the end of the 10 day pre op diet, my all rights I should be laing in my bed, passed out from lack of energy.

That's my two cents.

My preference is Slim Fast low carb chocolate... they're the easiest since pre-made but not as much Protein as some of the mixes (especially if you mix with milk or soymilk)

My doc and nutitionist told me not to drink the slimfast. I forgot why, but they said it wasnt a good drink for us to use.

Not sure about you, but I find the (gag!) shakes so gross!! The only one that tastes good to me is SlimFast, but it has too little Protein to be of much use to us (though I do have one for breakfast most days).

My doctor gave me an Isopure drink in my post-op pack that's more like a sports drink. They sell them at GNC, and they have more than 40 grams of Protein, no carbs & no sugar. The taste is WAY better than the shakes. I put a photo of the bottle in an early post on my blog.

I use the 365 from Whole Foods. It comes in vanilla and chocolate and I add flavorings or frozen fruit into the blender. They taste great and friends are also using them . I sometimes have one during the day if the total Protein for the day is not at 60. The band was the best decision of my life. Good luck to all with the "journey"

I have tried several of the suggestions for the Protein shake supplements. I really haven't tried too many of the powders b/c you have to buy in such bulk.

The Isopure Fruit drinks looked and smelled pretty good but they did give you incredible dry mouth.

I think what I like best is EAS carb control in chocolate fudge... only 17 grams of Protein but you can get an 8 pack at Walmart for $7.68 or something like that.

I have found the more protein it has the worst it tastes~! LOL

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Might not be the best for you, but I love Carnival Instant Breakfast shakes. They are soooo good. They have SF and one marked 4X Protein, both will do when I need to do a day of liquids. Easy and cheap to get in the grocery store. Much better than canned versions.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
