2pm arrival time for procedure - no food/DRINK after midnight the night before?????

Recommended Posts

So, I just got a call that I am scheduled to show up at 2pm tomorrow for the LapBand...which means I won't be in the O.R. until about 3pm. I was told no food or drink after midnight the night before, but I assumed that I'd have the procedure done in the a.m. I just called the doctor's office and talked to a nurse stating "those are the rules" and gave me such attitude when I asked if it was okay to drink a little Water up until say 5am or 7am. Anyone else have an afternoon procedure? Did you have the same experience?

(Of course I will follow any rules about this, but I'm more ticked off about this woman's attitude....the LAST thing I needed the night before a procedure...and all I was doing was trying to understand the logic of it all. She wasn't interested in logic - she was just interested in "following the rules" and not interested in confirming this w/ the surgeon.)

I have the same situation. My procedure is Friday at 2:30pm. No food or drinks after midnight. However, the nurse said if I wanted a small drink of Water say around 6am, it should be fine. However, I don't plan on being UP that early. :)

BethfromVA, thanks for your reply!! I feel better about it... I took out my "hostility" on cleaning my house! Geez, it was almost like "nesting" before my kids were born! :)

Oh that sucks!

I would think a Water or coffee early would be OK that will be well through your system. DH was banded in the arvo and his rules were no food or drink after 7 am that day.

Whenever I've needed fasting blood tests I keep putting it off and off because I just cant wait for my morning coffee!

Yeah, this is why I made sure I was the first or second person on the schedule for the date of my surgery. That doesn't sound very fun.

They just booked me based on the day I picked and, dumb me, I guess I just thought I was the first or only one for the day! lol It wasn't until my pre-op last week that I was told what time to be at the hospital. I think I got rug burn on my chin.

Depending on how the operating room schedules their cases (by time or to follow) is why they tell you no food or drink after midnight. If they do a "to follow" schedule (which most operating rooms do) then you possibly could have surgery earlier than your told time. Surgeries are scheduled on average times for that procedure and sometimes it takes half the time allowed. They don't want to have to hold on your surgery because it hasn't been enough time from your last drink or meal. Hope that helps. (obviously I have worked in an operating room for a long time).

=)

ouch so sorry to hear that. I went for my pre-admit yesterday and they scheduled me for 5:30AM on 12/3....I hope the doctor has his coffee before he cuts me, dont want a groggy doc making mistakes.

I wish you guys luck!!! You will do fine.

I didn't end up going under the knife until almost 7:30 pm following the midnight fasting thing. Consider yourself lucky! The girl that was at the airport with me the day of surgery didn't go in until after me and that was around 10:00! I think the reason they kept giving us Xanax to put under our tongue was to keep us drugged up so we wouldn't start bitching. It pretty much worked lol.

Yep, that was me. No food or drink past midnight and my procedure was at 2:15PM the next day. The worst part for me was not having my coffee in the morning. A little sip of Water isn't going to hurt... they give you that when they give you pre-op medicine. You'll wake up really thirsty. I was allowed to have ice chips until the next day when I had my upper GI to check for leaks.

Good luck!

I had to follow the same policy but my surgery wasn't until 4pm!

I was begging for ice chips the second I woke up from surgery.

Good luck with your surgery!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
