Kentucky Teen running out of options.

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I'm glad I found this forum, hopefully it will help me make a descsion.

My name is Emily, I'm 16, and am severely overweight, completely running out of options to improve my weight.

I need to drop at least 100 pounds to be considered even slightly healthy.

I've been on diet and exercise since i was about 10, and my weight has continued to balloon. =S I've been on weight watchers, gone to support groups, gone to gyms, I'm a vegitarian, and am about to go on birth control to see if my weight is hormone linked. If the brith control doesn't help, im considering having lap band surgery done before my senior year of high school.

Hopefully, this forum will help me in my choice, and as I said, I'm very glad I found it.

Hey girl! I can feel your pain I have been over weight my entire life! Been on diets since elementary school as well. Athletics and everything...you name it. I am glad you are here and among people who understand. I found the site yesterday and met some amazing people. I found a lot of great information in the chat room though....have you checked that out yet?

Hi Emily, I feel your pain. I was also heavy as a teenager. I have a twelve year old daughter who is also overweight. I try to help her without hurting her feelings about her weight. Of course you know that kids your age are so cruel. I hope that your parents are supportive of your effort to possible have the surgery. I would suggest you find a seminar and ask a lot of questions. I am not sure but I think you have to be eighteen in this country to have the surgery. I saw on tv the other day a show called The Doctors and a thirteen year old girl had to go to Mexico to have the surgery. Have you had your thyroid tested? I wish you well in your decision. Take care and if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Hello, and thank you for the feedback =]

My mother seems like you a lot, hopefully you daughter understands betetr than i did when iwas her age that you really arent trying to be mean. I just found my mother purely hateful at that age. =S

My mother and father support my choice, seeing how miserable I am bot emotionally and physically. I use to be a ballet dancer and had to stop due to growing weight, since then I've just been generally sick and miserable.

You do have to be 18 to get the surgery, but they take special cases for those close to the age. I'm hopign the doctors will approve me, I'm tired of going through high school not feeling able to do the things I want. I'm alreayd in the process of getting doctor approval though, in case my birth control fails me.

Emily, on the home page there is a section for teens. If you scroll down and look at the list you will find it. I just looked on it and there is a girl who is from Louisville KY looking for a buddy. As a parent I have to warn you to be careful and not meet anyone without your parents knowing. Sorry but I am a worry wart by nature.

I didn't see that before, thank you.

And Don't worry, I'm pretty safe about that, I have never met a single person I know online in an offline setting, but I thank you for the concern and advice <3

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
