Help from those who've had surgery after LB Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm having surgery in December and want to know if you had to have a complete unfil before going in? I will be completely under. One NP says that its not necessary to have a complete unfil (except she recommends it), another says I should. What is your experience? Did you have a complete unfil or partil? Your help is appreciated!

I had a complete unfill, and was unfilled for 6 weeks following the surgery. During that time I gained about 6 lbs. I have just had a minor fill to start working the restriction back in.

Honestly I know I've been eating like crap, and if I simply curtailed it I wouldn't have needed the fill. The inability to exercise during that time didn't help either.

Both of my docs were worried about getting enough calories in to heal properly post-tuck, and thus the unfill. I had my first refill under fluoro so that the band doc could make sure nothing had been damaged during the procedure.

Thanks for your help. My dr said that a partial unfil will be ok. I'm not that tight now. I wouldn't be upset about it if I had had a better loss. But I'm back on track and will work with whatever I have to. Thanks for your help!

I didn't have an unfill. But I was not tight at all with only 4.5cc in my band. My last fill was in feb, so PS thought I would be fine, and I have been in that dept so far.

good luck!!

I want to keep my fill but that will be up to them, I think. My surgery is on Dec 4th and my next fill won't be until Dec 29th. Its possible that I can keep asking for a fill until I get one before then 'cause if I have to be unfilled then I'll go over thanksgiving & x-mas with no fill at all and that just won't work.

I had breast reduction and NO I did not have an unfill. I asked but the PS and my doc, they said it was not necessary.

I was very nervous nonetheless. The hospital staff was oblivious to my band needs, so be aware that you need to take care of yourself!

Even when I reminded the nurses on my overnight stay, they just did not get it.

I was allowed to have anything I wanted on the menu, so I had to use my good judgement.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
