Need Help-PCP says 30's are too young for WLS

Recommended Posts

My friend had a consult yesterday with his PCP regarding Lapband. He is early 30's with a BMI of 39.5%. Has high blood pressure and long history of heart attacks in his family. Many dieing in their 40's.

His PCP told him to walk 1 1/2 hrs a day, keep a food diary and that he would treat his high blood pressure with drugs.

Said he was too young for the lap band. And this insurance covers this procedure!!

--

Now, how does he proceed from here?

Can he find a weight loss surgeon and have them file the paperwork with his insurance? Can he bypass his PCP, or does he have to have that referral?? He is in the Ft Walton Beach, Fla area.

He is devestated.

some surgeons do not require PCP approval - but that might be an insurance stipulation & your friend should find those specifics out.

mine didn't find out till after i was banded ; only my OB knew because i was trying to get insurance approval with her help - to no avail; i still went ahead self pay.

30 is NOT TOO young - your friend is obese; no matter what age....taking care of that be it WLS is far better than the alternative with his given medical history.

if he has another dr (for heart/bp/etc) he should get in contact with them to get on board. when all else fails, i've seen people change PCP to GET the approval they need for surgery.

wishing your friend luck!!

Consider changing to a new primary care doctor. 30's is not too young for lap band...but it is too young to have a heart attack. Good luck and tell your friend to fight for what he wants...his life depends on it!

Now, how does he proceed from here?

He should get a new PCP. Even if his surgeon or insurance does not require a referral from the PCP, there will be things that the PCP has to do -- such as order tests, do a physical -- and if you have a PCP who doesn't support you, they can really gum up the works by being a bottleneck for these things.

Plus his attitude towards WLS stinks!

I would change PCP's asap....get one who is more sympathetic and not so judgmental. I switched my PCP a few years ago and thank heavens I did. My old one probably wouldn't approve of lap band she was a skinny women who said things like "We must lose weight" "We must quit smoking"....I finally asked her what the "We" meant when it was 'ME". She was not amused. I changed right after that, quit smoking and now am losing weight, she does not work at the clinic where I go anymore I can see why. No warmth or bedside manner at all. I would like to find her and go give her a big "Raspberry" LOL LOL

I am 39 and told to gain more weight. That is when I went to the obesitycontrolcenter.com and found Dr. Ortiz (yes, Mexico). He has performed nearly 7000 surgeries. If your friend can suck it up and not do the insurance game, pay the 8k like many do and go over the border.

The doctors and big pharma make it WAY too difficult for people in the US to have WLS here.

good luck

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
