Healthy choices for the Mushies phase?

Recommended Posts

I'm on Day 13 post-op and I get to start my Mushies phase on Thursday!

I lost 8lbs within the first 5 days post-op, and nothing since. And I've been on full liquids! I'm scared that when I start the Mushies phase I'm going to gain it all back and then some. So I'm determined to make healthy choices! The only thing I ever hear about is mashed potatoes, refried Beans with salsa and sour cream, and that no-noodle lasagna thing, which is just Pasta Sauce, ricotta cheese, cottage cheese, and mozzarella shreds.

I was wondering if anyone had a list of healthy mushies?

I heard from my dietician that most patients don't lose much weight if any during the first 6 weeks, so if you can lose a little, or at least hold your ground, you're doing great.

As far as mushies, I just finished a week of it. I ate pureed chicken, ham, pork, and perogies. Cottage cheese with simply fruit jam for flavor. scrambled eggs whipped with milk and sour cream (great stuff). Quaker Weight Control instant oatmeal that has 6g of Protein and 1g of sugar - also great stuff.

all in all, not so bad.

Did you puree the perogies, or eat them as is? They're fabulous - but also potato and Pasta. :( I like the scrambled eggs idea, and cottage cheese with some low sugar jam could definitely work.

Thanks! Keep 'em comin'!

Here are some things I've been eating (I'm on mushies now too):

* Cottage cheese -- sometimes with pureed banana (I add a little skim milk & blend it up), which is quite yummy.

* Poached salmon

* Soup (I still am pureeing the really chunky ones, like turkey chili -- but that's because I like it better like that!)

* Low fat yogurt

* Cream of Wheat

* Slim Fast (I having a SF shake for Breakfast every day to help keep my calories down)

I was really frustrated because I have pretty much stopped losing during my "mushies" phase (technically, I've gained & lost the same 2 lbs several times. . ). However, it's been encouraging to see that this is normal and that I shouldn't really expect to see any significant losses until after my first fill.

Welcome to mushy-land! :(

so what exactly is a ricotta bake? i did a google search and found some recipes, but i wanna make sure it's the same thing you're referring to. the recipes online make it sound like a big block of baked cheese, similar to baked brie...i just wanna double check that's what you're talking about! :)

you can make it many different ways,

i take a lg container of LF ricotta / frozen spinach - thawed & drained well / 1 egg / fresh herbs - i like tyme or basil / 1/2c Parmesan or romano. mix well, pour in a baking dish, add an additional 1/2c cheese on top - bake 350 till bubbly & brown on top.

you can make this any way you want - pureed zucchini / eggplant...add pesto/marinara, lots of things you can do to change it up.

it kinda got me thru my italian food cravings early on/

I had a real hard time with the mushies phase. I could not tolerate anything in a blender! I got permission from my surgeon to eat cottage cheese, canned tuna with mayo, canned chicken with mayo, seafood salad and turkey chilli with no Beans. Any soft fish was also okay. If I didn't think I had enough Protein, I drank a lo-cal Protein Shake. Also, Taco Bell pintos and cheese works well. I asked for extra cheese to up the protein. I lost weight on the mushy phase (about 2 lbs a week).

I've been doing lots of cottage cheese and refried Beans with cheese & sour cream (low fat).

But last night I had a delicious dinner. It was a crab cake (Phillips brand from freezer section at Walmart) with some butter Beans.

The noodle-less lasagna has been really good too, but I'm more of a meat-eater so I try to find ways to get Protein through fish. I'm allowed tuna salad or chicken salad with a little bit of mayo.

I haven't had an egg yet, will have that tomorrow. May even make some egg salad.

Thanks for sharing the ricotta bake recipe, Lulu! :)

mom2two and I had surgery on the same day! i had 3 days of Clear liquids, then 11 days of full liquids - so liquids the first 2 weeks. i also just started mushies for 1 week, then soft foods for 1 week, then i'm free!

each doctor has different plans for pre- and post-op so i suggest you follow your doctor's orders. one thing that has amazed me throughout this whole process is the drastic difference in pre- and post-op doctor's orders! it's crazy! they're all placing the same band, so i don't understand why everyone has a different plan. :thumbup:

I was 2 weeks Clear Liquids 2 weeks mushy now on 2 weeks soft. It's gets easier every day to make healthy choices and I've become very creative. Just a warning for egg salad though...it made me want to pb for 2 days and I had to go back on liquids to feel better. I don't exactly know why because I can eat scrambled but it just taught me to try new things at home LOL Goodluck!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
