How do I get the ball rolling?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I am currently 17, my 18th will be next Wednesday & my current doctor doesn't support the Lap band because she doesn't think it's very safe. But, how do I go about pursuing getting the procedure done. I know you have to do pre-op tests & such. Really, is it a long process to get approved & have a set-up surgery date? Like what's the average, was it hard, smooth, etc.? Please, just let me know about your personal experience. I am not a self-pay btw. My mom told me insurance would cover it.

This can be a very complicated answer, but the first place to start is to check with your insurance company.

Call them and find out what your insurance covers when it comes to bariatric surgery. If they do cover the surgery, find out what they require for you to qualify.

Most companies are very tight about what is covered. Most insurance companies will cover surgery if the patient has a BMI over 40. They will also consider patients' with BMI over 35 if you have other co-factors like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, etc., but you may also have to undergo a strict 6 month diet to show that you have tried, but can not lose the weight thro traditional means. There may also be a need to prove that you have been overweight for at least 5 years.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
