Ask all the questions you want that what the site is here for!

Yes, if they open you up and your liver is too fatty then they will simply close you back up without the band.

I have a fatty liver. I actually had to have it resected last year because, my liver was not functioning properly. My surgeon stated that I had to lose 100 lb soon, or my liver could stop functioning all together and then I would be on a transplant list. With that being said, my lap band surgeon is aware of my fatty liver. He stated that he would try to perform the surgery laproscopic, but if the liver was too big or if I have too many adhesions from the prior surgery he would have to do an open lap band procedure. I have been on the liver shrink diet for 4 weeks now hoping that we can go the first way mentioned. But he also has prepared me for the worse too!

My surgeon told me a story about a patient who swore up and down that he had been on Protein Shakes but just could not lose the weight. When he started the surgery, because the liver was pressing down on the on the stomach, he could not secure the lapband on the stomach even though he was able to place it. He had to schedule another surgery just to stitch the band in place after he lost some more weight. The patient had to pay for the extra surgery.

Yes Ive heard that If your liver to too fatty they wont continue with surgery .

Its normally postponed until weight is lost and liver is shrunk , so pre op u must be on a low fat diet and defo no alcohol.

My surgeon was cancelling ops before hand If u hadnt lost the required amount before surgery.

My dietician called and warned me So by god I made sure I lost that pre op weight:tongue2:

I asked about my liver after surgery , surgeon said my liver was perfect :)

I was suprised as my diet was bad before my pre op diet although I hardly drink .

Best wishes ...

AND good luck x

I too have a fatty liver, discovered on a CatScan done a couple of years ago. If you actually watched a Lapband surgery they have to lift up the liver to get it out of the way to do the band as it lays on the stomach.

Anything to help shrink things up to make that easier is important to do!!!! The pre op weight loss and liquid fast prior to is of the utmost importance!! I followed instructions to the tee and all went well for me!!!

Wish you all health and happiness!

Hey quick question, I am so nervous that I messed up, my surgery is November 22nd. I have been doing liquids since November 14th. I was able to do a Banna/Orange/Apple to relieve headaches. But I had some cheese and a few crackers last night on November 18th so I could take my medicine(prevent a cold). Since I started liquids I have lost 12lbs. Was that a bad move, will my liver blow up again to process what I ate???

No Chellie, one slip up would not ruin the entire pre-op diet. The whole idea of the pre-op diet is that when we diet the first place that fat leaves our bodies is from around the liver. Certain types of diets of like high Protein liquid cause this fat to go away faster.

A couple cheese crackers will not cause all the fat to reappear. Of course it would be a risk to make a habit of it or you could wake up from surgery with only incisions and no band.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
