Hi from Connecticut

Hi. My name is Betsy and I am planning to get banded in December. However, I have just read the threads on band slippage and other things that can go wrong, and I now I am scared to death. It sounds like a lot of things can go wrong even if you've done everything right!

I would really like to hear your opinions on this. Especially from people who have had it in for a long period of time.

Thanks,

Betsy

Hi Betsy. Welcome to LapBandTalk!

Yes, the long-term complications rate for the band can be scary. This is why I changed my mind and got a vertical sleeve gastrectomy instead. It's a little riskier in the beginning (you can have a leak or a stricture), but long-term complication rates are pretty much unheard of and easily headed off with some Vitamin supplementation.

Have you looked at all four ASMBS approved surgeries? Here's a chart that compares them:

Welcome to the forum Betsy!

I think we're all scared going into it, it's the unknown and besides complications, worrying if it will work or not.

You have to do what you feel is best for you, and once you make a decision, try not to second guess yourself due to fear. Fear of not changing anything is even scarier!

I did have a minor complication early on, my port flipped and I had to have a revision surgery 6 months later. Despite that, I think the band is the best decision I ever made. I was down 121lbs before I got pregnant a few months ago.. I have since gained 17lbs back, but I am confident once I have the baby I will be back on track in no time!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
