Betsy1962 0 Posted November 16, 2008 Hi. My name is Betsy and I am planning to get banded in December. However, I have just read the threads on band slippage and other things that can go wrong, and I now I am scared to death. It sounds like a lot of things can go wrong even if you've done everything right! I would really like to hear your opinions on this. Especially from people who have had it in for a long period of time. Thanks, Betsy
MacMadame 81 Posted November 17, 2008 Hi Betsy. Welcome to LapBandTalk! Yes, the long-term complications rate for the band can be scary. This is why I changed my mind and got a vertical sleeve gastrectomy instead. It's a little riskier in the beginning (you can have a leak or a stricture), but long-term complication rates are pretty much unheard of and easily headed off with some Vitamin supplementation. Have you looked at all four ASMBS approved surgeries? Here's a chart that compares them: Weight-Loss Surgeries Compared
Daisalana 33 Posted November 17, 2008 Welcome to the forum Betsy! I think we're all scared going into it, it's the unknown and besides complications, worrying if it will work or not. You have to do what you feel is best for you, and once you make a decision, try not to second guess yourself due to fear. Fear of not changing anything is even scarier! I did have a minor complication early on, my port flipped and I had to have a revision surgery 6 months later. Despite that, I think the band is the best decision I ever made. I was down 121lbs before I got pregnant a few months ago.. I have since gained 17lbs back, but I am confident once I have the baby I will be back on track in no time!
