Post-surgery, when do you feel "normal" again?

Recommended Posts

I'm five days post-surgery this morning, and while I don't ache at my incision sites anymore, I still feel pretty week. Is it just that I haven't gotten all the anesthetic out of my system yet? Is it ongoing caffeine withdrawal? I've had 45 - 50 g of Protein each of the last two days so that's probably not it, but I'm wondering when I'll feel normal again.

It really took me a good week to a week and a 1/2 to feel like a human again. I was groggy, sore, and anything else you can think of. I am sure in a few more days you will really start to feel better.

I was banded on the 11th and still feel yucky too. I did have a hernia repaired so that didn't help. I am hoping I will feel better soon. The pain meds really do help. Hand in there, we will get through this.

I had my surgery on the 6th, and I don't I started to feel well until about 4 days after the surgery. Day 6, I was all out trying to walk around and shop, but on by the evening of day 7, I discovered that I may have done too much. I was home with a heating pad (because I refuse to take any more meds). I realize that its very important to take it easy for as long as you can. I am missing out on a few things, not getting around as I normally would. I will take that risk for healing. So relax and take things as slow as you can. Trust me, you aren't missing a thing.

Heidi,

The most amazing thing happened to me during my 7th day post-surgery.....it is as if all of the pain lifted, and I almost forgot that I even had surgery.

Everyone heals differently, so please just take it easy if you aren't feeling well. It's really important to focus on your healing so that it lessens your chance of complications later on.

I noticed that I got tired pretty easily for the first few weeks after my surgery.

I think it was around 10 days for me. I was banded on 10-22 and I feel great. Totally back to normal for me! Hope all goes well for you, take it easy. This is called the recovery period for a reason.

I was banded on November 11 and I feel tired, weak, and a little bit of pain. But I feel so much better than when I was in the hospital. I am totally taking my time to recover and will be off work for two weeks.

Good luck to you and try not to rush it.

First week was tough and I got progressively better the following weeks. However, by about 1 month out where I was eating more, that was the point at which I got some real energy back and felt a little better than even before banding.

I felt pretty good rather quickly but it did take about three weeks to not feel discomfort from sitting at my desk all day.

Thanks, everyone! I am feeling better today than I did yesterday - still a little achy and not my normal energy levels, but I'm not completely woozy like I was yesterday for most of the day.

And I managed a walk around Target with a friend! More lemonade crystal light for me!

I was the same way! For me ,I started to feel MUCH better about a week and a half after surgery. I wondered the same thing too as far as if I was going to feel normal anytime soon (I was banded on November 3rd) so i'm right there with you. I promise you will at least 75 % better by next week.

By a week and a half I was feeling much better, just a little sore at the port area and had to remind myself to take it easy.

Now at almost 3 weeks, the only way I remember I have a band is by the incision scars on my belly. I feel great!! I have more energy and am eating food (carefully) but am doing great! I feel like myself again, and sometimes better than myself. LOL

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
