hey. i haven't been banded yet, my op is on dec 8. my doctor told me that if i didn't follow the pre-op diet, they would have to cut me from the top of my chest due to my liver being too big. now, i'm not sure if thats true or if he was just trying to scare me. i have read other peoples posts on here where they went in for surgery and the doctor closed them back up because their liver wasn't small enough.

I'm wiht you guys. I had to do a preop diet fro 5 days today is Day 4 mine was 3oz of meat 2 x a day and then 3oz of meat or plain eggs in the AM in addition 3 oz of chicken broth. It's supposed to put your body in Ketosis. I Kepp checking my Urine and I see no Ketones on the strip so I'm SCARED TO DEATH  that my surgeon will say no. I did cheat yesterday and had 3 bites of B-day cake and 4 bites of stuffing I made for Thanksgiving. I'm so upset with myself but today is a new day.

Hi,

All the best of good luck and success. Reading the replies I can see the post op died differs from doctor to doctor a great deal. I am seeing my surgeon tomorrow and my program from the nutrionalist has me on shakes (slim fast high protein) and then a dinner or lunch of 4-6 oz. of Protein, 1 or 2 servings of bread/starch like 1/2 potatoes, corn, lima Beans, 6 saltine crackers, 1 1o slice of whole grain bread and 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables and one snack of small cup fresh fruit, one cup fresh cut up fruit, one oz low fat cheese or 1 cup law fat artificially sweetened or non-fat plain yogurt. Check with your doctor but I haven't even been able to eat all this as I have been so busy with my grandkids. I have already begun to lose weight which is encouraging me to stay with this and I too heard about this whole liver issue. Good luck and keep posting. Betsy

You should really try hard to stick to the pre-op diet. It is usually done to shrink the liver so that it is easier to move during surgery. I do know at least one person that didn't follow their prescribed pre-op diet and came out of surgery with no band. They were very disappointed. Needless to say, that diet was followed to the letter the next time and surgery went on as planned. It is really for your own good to follow whatever your doctor has said to do. I know it is hard (I did it for 10 days), but it is a short period of time when you think of the lifetime that you will have with your band. Keep trying.

I think I'm probably the person slim-n-tn is referring to. I only "kind of" followed the preop diet, lost 15 pounds in 3 weeks, and doc operated. I came to in recovery to be told he couldn't place the band because my liver was too large. He said he COULD have opened me up and placed it but knew since I am a nursing student and have to be physcially able to do clinicals that I wouldn't heal in time. (thank goodness!) SO I did what he said for 2 1/2 more weeks and 17 more pounds, and the band was placed.

Follow your doc's diet. He has you do it for a reason. If you cheat, let him know. It may be uncomfortable but trust me, it beats going through surgery for nothing.

Your right slim no matter how hard is we have to try. I've been pulling out my hair but I have officalially reache Ketosis today and that is what the Dr. is looking for. Stay strong Kutach and all the other's Pre op dieting.

one cheat cn make you stay out of ketosis for two weeks (I've done the low carb and cheated) I speak from experience. But that doesn't mean you haven't reached your doctors desires. Stay strong! You can do this! :smile2: What's 14 days to a lifetime of happiness?

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
