Hello from Jacksonville, FL

Recommended Posts

I have just begun researching lap band surgery as a weight loss option. I think my insurance may cover a portion but won't know for sure until Monday. I have been battling my weight for years and recently quit smoking resulting in a harder battle. I am now at approximately 240 (probably higher since it has been a week since I weighed). I am 5' 7" which puts my bmi around 37. I have a couple of comorbidities but nothing major ????(pain in hips, snoring/possible apnea, and chronic irritation of thigh and groin area). My oldest daughter had gastric bypass surgery @ 24. I always thought I could get a handle on my weight on my own. I quit smoking for my health and now will have the surgery for my health. I hope this process goes smoothly with the insurance company. I hate to go to Costa Rica but I will if I have to. If anyone can recommend an Orange Park doctor that would be great.

Welcome to LapBandTalk.

Personally, I'd go to Mexico before I'd go to Costa Rica. There are some great docs there and it's closer.

sleep apnea, if it's bad enough, is definitely a co-morbidity under all insurances I have seen. The other stuff, not so much. Some of the insurance companies are really buttheads about co-morbidities! For example, my insurance company wouldn't count my high blood pressure because it was controlled by medicine.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
