How do you know if your band has slipped?

Recommended Posts

I think (don't know, just processing what I've read) that you can tell because it hurts to eat. If you have been chewing well and eating the right quantities once you have restriction and didn't "cheat" on your post op diet (ie eating when you were supposed to be on liquids) the odds of a slip are very very miniscule.

If you cheated, or vomited a lot (for whatever reason, stomach virus, PB, slime, whatever) or have pain ...

maybe.

You can do everything "right" and it slip but it's rare. And even then, from what I've read, it's painful and you know something's wrong.

My band slipped right after surgery, even before I was awake I would say. My port hurt really bad-so bad that it hurt to move and I was afraid to cough. I could get liquids down okay, but once I ate soemthing solid (scrambled eggs) I got really sick and vomited for hours before I finally start to vomit blood-that's when I knew something was wrong. I found out that my hand had slipped, the back side of my stomach had herniated up inside the band and caused an obstruction. I had emergency surgery to have that band taken out and a new one put in and I was fine after that.

Can hiccups cause the band to slip? This morning I got a really bad case of hiccups and got nervous. In the past the only way I can cause my hiccups to stop is to take about 10 sips of Water without stopping to squash the air bubble but was afraid to do that this morning... didn't want a back up.

I have never heard of that before-I don't think it will hurt to drink Water. I was able to drink normally after surgery-I didn't need to take sips. Try it-if it's too much, the water might just come back up. I have had the hiccoughs before and not had any problems except that they are annoying.

Candicane: I had my surgery on November 11, so our recovery is at the same time. Last night I swallowed my liquid pain medicine the wrong way, which through me into a coughing fit. OUCH!

I grabbed my hospital cough bear, placed it over the main port incision and braced myself. I tried to remain calm and work through it. I think it is very natural to have soreness one week after surgery in the incision area.

I think the area of concern would be if you have severe pain that you can not tolerate.

I was banded on sept 25th but have a friend who was banded last october. She just had her band removed because it slipped. She just did not have good luck with it, she said she was sick ALL the time . I have not had any problems at all but was nervous because she got rushed to the hospital cause she was throwing up blood. She said she thought she was going to die! I asked my doctor how would I know if the band slipped, and she said I would know by the awful pain, but she also said it is VERY VERY rare, so I geuss thats good! Good Luck with everything!!! And hopefully no band slipping!!!!

Candicane - I keep a pillow ready for when I cough. It's just as painful to blow my nose and I'm afraid to sneeze.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
