Hello,

I had surgery 10/15 and lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks. It's going to be 1 month since surgery and I haven't lost any weight. I am eating small portions excerising 4 to 5 times a week. I just want to know if it's normal? Will I begin losing weight again? I'm not even snacking. Any advice would be great.

Thanks

M:smile:

How many calories / day? It is helpful for some of us to journal everything we eat. That way, we can go back and review at the end of the week (or whatever) exactly how many calories we're having. It's easy to lose track or underestimate the calories.

Or it could be that you're not eating enough, and your body is trying to go into "starvation mode".

Whatever the case, this is something you need to discuss with your surgeon.

If you lost 20lb in 2 weeks you can bet your bottom dollar it was a lot of Water. You simply do not lose fat that fast. So following that, your body rebalances and rehydrates itself and you appear not to lose weight. But you probably are losing fat - and that's the kind of weight loss you want.

I just had a long talk w/my surgeon about this today. I'm up a little from my post op week 2 low. He told me that he feels he's setting me up for long term success...no GERD, no PB'ing, slime, no esophageal spasms, etc. He said in his experience that it's best to fill me SLOW (and the fees have been covered by cost of surgery so he's not milking it for money) at about 1.5 cc's every 4-6 weeks. He said it may take 6 months or more for me to start really feeling it but that I'll "slide" into it instead of being plunged and that while some do well with that (and he'd do that if I wanted), that slow and steady does the best for most patients. SO

I'm going to trust him and not worry about it. I'm not losing, YET, and that's apparently ok. I will! If I'd been in a big rush, I'd have gotten bypass. I'll hang in there on his schedule.

Gaz,

I was banded 2 days before you!

I had some great initial weight loss (15 pounds right away), and then my weight stagnated around the time I progressed to mushies....I even went up a few pounds too

Now that I've been on real food for a while, the scale finally decided to move down again.

I'm done 18 pounds since my surgery and am totally happy with my progression.

I'd love to lose weight at a quicker speed, but slow and steady is much better for my overall health and for my sensitive skin.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
