kinda freaking out here (self-pay issues)

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

Welcome to my struggle-

I just got approved through Care Credit for 98% of the cost of the surgery. I super want this don't get me wrong, but now that I don't have to work for anything anymore I'm freaked out! I make no sense. I'm worrying now over things I wasn't before the what if's what if it goes bad- what if I need to removed- Slippage etc- can I REALLY afford this? Should I just wait, be miserable and see if SOMEDAY I'll get insurance? Is it stupid and compulsive of me to do this without insurance? I've been trolling in the life without the band forum getting all worked up too- Then I call care credit and she told me that they can't tell me what my % rate will be until I go to the "vendor". WTF? So I get this done and I find out my rate is 29.9 %! I'm just a emotional wreck. Is there someone out there that been in or is in this situation? I know a lot of this is my own issues and ultimately I have to make my own decisions but I dunno, had to reach out. SORRY! :)

Hi,

I am in the same position as you are. I am self pay also. My surgery is going to be 15,365 and that includes fills. I got a loan for 12,000 and the rest I'm trying to do Cash or credit. My interest rate is about 19%. 29% is ridiculous!! I would try to get another form of financing.

Anyways I was going through the motions with those thoughts about it being so much money, maybe I should wait for insurance, maybe I can do it on my own, what happens if I have to get it removed or it slips how am I going to pay for it etc,. I was actually talking myself out of something I wanted to have so badly the day before. And than I had a long chat with the DBF and he actually gave me some good advice.

First he said that it was my brain playing a trick on me and that my heart is what I should really listen to. Meaning that my brain was thinking of it's survival and not what it actually needs.

He also reminded me that I will never be as close to getting the lap band as I am right now and if I back out who knows if I will get another chance.

Also he told me not worry about slipping, removal etc,. IF that happens we will deal with it when we deal with it.

Also it may seem like a lot of money but just think how much you have spent in the past on diet plans, pills, exercise programs... and how much you will save on food. Its like getting a new car or better.

After he gave me this advice I felt alot better and than slept on it and it also gave me more of a resolve to actually do this and get the weight off for good!

You are the only one that can make this decision but just take some time and really think over it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
