Help, I think I just PB'd for the first time

Recommended Posts

I am nearly 6 months post op and I have just tried to eat steak and salad, a meal I have reguarly and after about 3 bites I had a lot of pain and then my mouth filled with Water as though I wanted to vomit and I brought up lots of slime. I am very careful when I eat and do chew thoroughly, but I did have a small drink of slightly carbonated Water just before the meal (I would normally have tea or coffee) could this be the cause or could it be that I maybe absentmindedly didn't chew properly. It was not a pleasant experience and I think I'll give food a miss tonight!!!. I did have my 2nd fill 3 weeks ago, so I am wonering if the fill has just kicked in maybe. Oh I dont know, but any advice you all have will be verymuch appreciated.

Almost, yep, yep, and yep!!! Almost a PB, by my own personal definition of things. A PB starts with getting stuck (the chest pain, golf ball feeling in the lower chest, you know, where the band is) then it turns to sliming, where the saliva builds up and then gets kind of frothy. This can be quick or last for hours with the sliming, but if my sliming doesn't make it pass, I give up and quit fighting it and let the PB rip. This is when whatever is stuck actually comes back. Did it come back up? If not, you got stuck and slimed. ewwww.

and yep, I suppose it could be the carbonated Water, but yep, more likely not chewing carefully enough and the biggest YEP is the fill kicked in! This is your signal to slow down. Ain't it grand?!

That's my take on it, your mileage may vary. I'd definately take it very mushy if not liquid for dinner, er, maybe Breakfast where you are? Welcome to restriction! Avoid steak for a while, eh? hehe

Thanks Kathy I did'nt bring up what got stuck and I think I can still feel it there slightly but there is no sliming and no pain so I'm hoping all will be ok now. I've just had a few sips of Water and that was fine. Thanks for the tips, its put my mind at rest. It probably only lasted about 25 minutes, if it lasted any longer I dont know what I'd do!!!

I certainly will be careful from now on. Promise

Could be from absent mindedness or it could also be your fill has kicked in , the band is a very fickle thing..I can eat something one day and the next day the same thing gets stuck..my fills take a week or so to kick in. Take it easy therest of the day, some Dr.'s require liquids after a PB to reduce swelling in the stoma and the esophagus.

I think you're probably right about the absentmindedness. Oh well at least I know the band is working!!!

Thanks

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
