Question about protien

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Monday and was told to start protien shakes on Wednesday, which I did, but I think that they are causing gas. My friend says it's because of the soy and whey in them. Anybody have any tricks to get past this?? I am doing pretty good with everything else, I have to slow down a little bit but other than that I am doing great. I could really go back to work today but I am not going to, I am giving myself the entire week. I never thought that gas pains could hurt so much.

Seppi, get out and walk, walking is the best cure for the gas. If the Protein Drink is causing you gas, buy a Protein drink with no whey or soy, but honestly tell your friend that many bandsters have gas pains for 2-3 weeks after surgery, it has nothing to do with the Protein Drinks. I was not allowed protein drinks for 10 days after my surgery, and I had gas. You are only 3 days post op, totally normal Seppi to have painful gas pains, again walking is thebest cure, maybe a little gas x too :) hang tough, it gets better

I have been walking and trying different things, I think I found the problem. I was using skim plus milk, I think it was making the gas 100 times worse. No that I am using regular skim milk I can handle the shakes easily.

seppi,

I had the same problem. Try lactaid milk. It really helped-a little more expensive, though, but worth it

good luck

Thanks, thought I was going nuts- will try the lactaid. Never thought of that. Never had a problem with milk.

I never had a problem with milk, either, but then again, I never drank it in such LARGE quantities !!!!

I've heard of people developing lactose intolerance in the post-surgery phase, indeed. It's probably because milk suddenly makes up such a large percentage of intake, quantities our bodies didn't have to deal with before. Good luck!

Congrats Seppi on your band!! AS for the gas i hope your solution works. But I was banded on June 3 rd & had very painful gas for 2 1/2 weekd total. Worst was the shoulder pain- holly COW! & I walked up a storm- it does pass & get better so don't worry about it to much. With myself & Protein drinks - yes they do give me gas when I drink them but now(6 weeks out) Its easier to belch & it goes away in one or two burps. Best of luck & walk walk walk.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
