Having a Drink week 2? (muchies)

Recommended Posts

:D I know were not suppose to. But....... I have a night planned the 2nd week going downtown to do a little xmas shopping and having a night without kids. Staying at a nice hotel. Never get to do this. Go figure it happens right after surgery. Me and my DH never go out. Anyone had a drink on week 2? Will I really damage my band? We are also going with my sister and brother in law who I have not told about the surgery and do not want to. They will know something is up if I don't have a drink. Any suggestions? Anyone have a drink on week 2?

Sorry for the sp should be mushies not muchies.

You REALLY need to ask your surgeon about this. For example, mine won't even clear us for Protein Drinks until week 2, and he has his reasons. Rather than do what people here tell you (and we are all different, as are our bands, doctors, bodies, recoveries etc, so not that anyone would ever intentionally steer you wrong!!) do what your doctor says. It's possible he'll say no big deal! I hope so! But its not just the alcohol; how will you get around not eating in front of the other couple?

Well I will be on mushies so I can kinda eat. I had my gallbaldder out over a year ago. So I always have stomach problems. I figure I can just say my stomach has been acting up and don't feel like eating that much. Then just have Beans mushed or mashed potatoes. My doctor on the mushies allows you to eat crumbled meats. So I have not really thought about the eating part. I am more worried about the drinking, they will for sure know something is up if I don't order a drink when were out without the kids that night. I have my pre-op tomorrow I guess I will just ask if it is ok to have a couple drinks that night.

The first person that replied is absolutely right you should check with your doctor and follow his plan. Having said that I did have a couple drinks week two. I didn't notice any adverse side effects but maybe i'm one of the lucky ones. I wouldn't recommend anything fizzy or carbonated. I stuck to vodka Water with a splash of lime. I'm sure there will be alot of flack on here for me saying this but you asked and I answered honestly. Your doctor will know what's right but I understand what your feeling.

Thank you for your honesty. I will ask tomorrow at my pre-op. But I am thinking a couple vodka cranberry can't hurt too much. I just wondered why it is my no section for week 2. Didn't know if it had to do with the healing process or just want you to be good. Thanks.

I can think of a couple reasons you'd be told no...1. it can irritate your stomach, especially when you aren't supposed to eat 2. It can hit you much more quickly than you are used to (especially when you aren't supposed to eat) 3. it can impair wound healing 4. It lowers inhibitions and can make you hungry, and if you eat prematurely you can reallly do some damage and of course 5. if you're still taking any pain med it can react badly.

You just had major surgery so please do ask your doc. I don't mean to sound like a prude or someone who thinks any alcohol is bad; to the contrary I almost didn't get the band because I really LOVE an occasional beer and can't have it any more! LOL So please know I just mean this in a "good" way.....take care of yourself. And hopefully your doc will say "SURE having a couple will do you good"

Wannabe..Don't do it. If you're in week 2, shouldn't you be on liquids? Not liquor..lol..Jk..Every surgeon is different. My Hubby and I went to this spot here in Texas called Tommy Bahama Cafe' in the Woodlands. If you ever come down, it's a must visit. We sat at the bar, I was like now what am I suppose drink? My Hubby ordered a Margarita (sp). I ordered a flavored tea. Well our waitress, she was so kind. She bought my ice tea in a nice size wine glass with a lemon wedged on the side along with some cherries. I was like WTF, does she know I had lapband surgery and can't drink? That really made me feel like I was drinking more than what I was really drinking..lol...I said all that to say, you can order something that's non alcolholic, just tell them to put in a special glass, just for you. Your cranberry juice and Vodka is not worth it. You are still in the healing process. You will have your chance to get your drink on. You don't know how your body is going to react to the liquor. Then you're family will really have some questions.

If you want an excuse w/out telling them about the surgery, tell them you are on antibiotics...Flagyl is one antibiotic that specifically says no drinking. Let us know what you decide.

if your saying your stomach hurts and you can't eat then I would think they would understand not drinking. I wouldn't risk it this early.

Hey WannaBe,

I see that on your ticker it has your surgery date as 11/19/08? Have you not had your surgery yet? Today is 11/12/08 so are you asking about drinking prior to surgery? If that is the case I wouldn't see any harm in that.

No I was asking about drinking on week 2 (mushies). Went for my pre-op and it is ok to have a drink. Whew. So I guess I can order fish that night and have some wine. :)

I agree that you should check with your surgeon, but I wanted to let you know that I had my surgery Nov 4th, 2008 and I have had a couple drinks since. I still can't recall any of my papers saying that I could not. I have not pushed it and drank anything and everything. I have had a glass of wine and a margarita. I have had zero problems from doing this. Just remember if you are eating not to drink with it, you will get way to full and your not suppose to.:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
