21-30-51 Excercise Challenge 4 12/08 Bandsters!

Recommended Posts

That's 21-30-51 EXERCISE Challenge 4 12/08 Bandsters! (oops!)

Good Mon Morn Dec 08 Bandsters!

Can u believe only 30...less or more days for all of us to be banded & begin a new chapter in our lives?! It will be interesting to see the different pre-op plans, doctor requirements and more across the country!

So the challenge...thought we all could start to exercise together today!

Challenge: to exercise each day up to our Banding Dates...so it will fall anywhere from 21 days to 30 to up 51 days from now, to cover the month of Dec Band Surgeries.

I am challenging myself to exercise 30 min+ for 30 days prior to my surgery. Anyone up for it? Thought we could log in our times/description of/how we're doing on the board, and ask Fla Pete to make a special siggie for those who are succesful! (I use SparkPeople.com to log in all!)

(Lil extra story) At my local support group, I have met an incredible woman who is a bandster, who is in a wheelchair, with MS & knees waiting for operations. In just 2 months she looks wonderfully changed from being banded this year. Part of her story to share is that she can ONLY WALK under Water (aqua exercise) and yet she does it weekly to get healthy. She shared how important it was to do this Bfore surgery, and prep our bodies, with also a routine to get back into after surgery. She has been featured in a magazine, I will try to get a link, but her testimony has literally personally challenged me to MOVE! So, thank you for being a monthful of bravehearts to walk together with into a new chapter of our lives and 2BFine in 2009!

I actually started a daily exercise program yesterday. In all honesty the beginning of my exercise program is to start walking daily. For so many years now I have not even gotten out to do this on a regular basis. Yes at the beginning of this year I did do this very well for a couple of months but other then that I wouldn't exercise at all.

So for now it's walking for 30 minutes after work. So one down and 23 to go.

This is a great idea. I've been very unmotivated to exercise. I think it has something to do with the fact that it's usually dark alread when I get off work. This should help me commit to it. I have a gym membership, so I plan on using it starting this week!

My wife and I went walking again last night. With the time change it sure does make the evenings feel a lot later then they are. I get off work at 5, run over to the day care and pick up my son, and then meet my wife at home. We change quick into walking clothes and head right out. It's not fully dark out when we're walking but the sun sure is almost completely down by then.

With the walking we have been doing pretty well. I do get to the point that I am breaking out in a sweat which has never been that hard to do but it also tells me that I am doing enough to get my heart rate up and maintain that heart rate for atleast 15 minutes to burn off calories.

Hi Pete, Hi Trina, and Dec Bandsters!

Thanks for taking up the challenge! There is something about accountability and working with others that gets me going, I have walked 30+ min ea day, when I could've easily excused myself (gotten lazy). Amazing how quick our bodies respond to just the simplest of efforts, my BPressure just drops when I get consistent! That is one of the medications I am hoping to lose, among others. I also found a pretty good heart rate monitor watch at Walmart for about $35., it is a Mio. It really helps to watch my rate while exercising, and then cool to see how my heart rate is still working at a good percentage after exercising!

Have a blessed day of exercising and activity! :D

Just checking in! Still going strong and doing great with the walking. My wife and I were talking about it last night while on our walk how we both need to really push ourselves to make sure we get out there every day. We both are sleeping better at night and feel like we already have more enegry throughout the day. Keep it coming!!!

Greetings Pete, your wonderful supporter wife (sorry don't know name yet), Trina and Dec Bandsters!

Sounds like you guys are on your way! I have been walking 30-40+ minutes each day, which is wow, esp, since I am fighting congestion & cough...which would stop me before...but NOT now! Want to be ready to literally 'walk" thru the recovery!

{{Is everyone doing lots of walking? I have been told getting moving before the surgery really helps in recovery.

Fran in Florida Band Date 12.10.08 }}

I too have been blessed with a spouse who truly supports me, he has lost weight recently (I think to prepare for us together), and also a good support sister who is now helping me to pre-op well! Learning that the support is going to mean a whole lot in the upcoming weeks. Have a good day!

I did it! I did IT! Today was our 5K Mercy Ministries Run/Walk (of course I walked) and did 19 min miles, with a 60 min time! It really felt good, last year I did it at about 20 lbs. +, and came in very last place. This year, I jogged in the last quarter and wasn't last! Amazing what 20-25 lbs lost can do...excited for it to be more, but in slow, steady and sure phases, why the band!

Wow! Congrats! That is a big accomplishment!

I am still doing good with the walking! I made it through the weekend and made sure to get out and walk. It felt really good.

Thanks for posting the challenge!

I'm joining a little late, but I'm in...

I haven't really done anything and I am getting banded in 2 weeks (not good!!) 30 minutes walking everday until banded. I need to courage to walk into the gym that I joined 2 months ago and haven't stepped a foot into because of my size! I know no one cares.. It's amazing how your mind can paralyze you.

Thanks Fran & Pete for the encouraging words. Welcome, Bandtastic! As Fran said, I believe ANY exercise we get moving in now will help with the surgery, just getting the muscles and blood a pumping, if even to help our body relieve the stress we can be going through in preparing for the surgery! I am so amazed at how my blood pressure esp. just DROPS from walking consistently.

Something I am surprised at, I am now looking to park a few more spaces away, instead the very front one, because I CAN walk more steps because I want to! The challenge goes on with us as a team, and preparing all over for the new life on the horizon!:rolleyes2:

Welcome Bandtastic to the challenge!

I completely understand and sympathize with you over the gym. I haven't ever gotten myself to even walk into a gym to get the membership because of my size even though I know people wouldn't care. The best I have ever done is used the gym at different apartment complexes I have lived at. But even still now at the place we're living at now I haven't used the gym.

The good news is I have still gotten out and walked every day since I took on this challenge. I am even introducing walking during lunch at work 3 days a week starting this past Monday. Woot!

it was fine..no one cared... i recomend it to everyone (LOL)

did 20 min on eliptical and 25 on the treadmill (walking).. very slowly..back was aching... havent worked out in ages.. felt good to sweat!!! think i got a walkers high!! hope i can move tomorrow!!

thanks rosey for the challenge.....now somebody needs to rally and make me go tomorrow!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
