bread and hummus

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I know everyone days they can no longer eat bread. Is this true? I never eat hunks of bread but will I no longer be able to have a sandwich or a hamburger?

Also, does anyone know if hummus is high Protein? I was thinking how great it would be for the mushie stage.

I can still eat crackers (sometimes) but loaf bread and Buns cause instant PB. I tried eating one of those round subway tuna sandwiches with the top half taken off. Man oh man I PB'd for 15 minutes. Now hummus no problem I eat mine with wheat thins and they are delicious. I have not tried pita bread and probably won't I figure the less bread I eat the better off I will be.

Hummus is a GREAT food for the mushie stage. I practically lived on it.

bread is one of those things that most bandsters just phase out. It's not like suddenly your body won't be able to handle it or anything; it's just a mechanical fact that with so little room in the pouch and stoma, bread products fill us up WAY too fast. You may indeed have a couple of bites of bagel for lunch one day, but when you realize that will become your entire lunch, you will probably decide to eat something else most of the time. I've just decided I prefer eating the entire insides of a sandwich without the bread, rather than only two bites of the sandwich or burger with the bread. :)

we can offer all kinds of our experiences, but being banded is really unique. Not only will your experiences be different than mine, but differnt from Jack's or Alex's or Kelly's or, well you get the picture.

There are a lot of things in common, but a lot of things are not. Also, your expeineces probably won't stay the same either. You may discover that during the 2nd week of the month your can and do tolerate sandwiches, yet on the tail end of the 3rd week you fined that -oh-my-gawd-PB! after a few bites of a sandwich.

But I think Jack is dead-on. You will probably find that your tastes change and what used to be your favorite no longer is.

Some people who don't tolerate bread do fine with a piece of toast.

I was banded on May 3, 2005, and absolutely cannot tolerate bread, although I tried one egg with cheese on 1/2 of an english muffin last week, and by taking really small bites was able to get that down. I was getting very hungry and my doctor suggested if I could include some very dry toast, or crackers, with my meals, it might help. After two episodes of sliming with other foods, there's no way I want to take a chance with bread.

I also had a bad PB incident after gulping down some wheat thins one day --- the operative words here being "gulping" --- one of those days when I got home from shopping, tired and hungry, and temporarily forgot I was banded! Well, I remembered real quick. My doctor also said to try one or two wheat thins, with some dip (or possibly hummus) --- so I think hummus is probably good.

The band has entirely changed my appetite, for which I am very grateful.

you do mean Yummus right?..hehe.....Yes its VERY high in Protein, its really good for u i think. The chickpeas and the oilve oil...(drooling).lol.....but you can eat it with other things besides bread. Like veggies, or on toasted whole wheat. i eat it with small crackers sometimes and just chew chew chew....it seems to go down just fine. I myself can't eat the bread anymore..(sadface) I could kill a loaf of bread by myself in the old days. lol...

Happy Chewing!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
