Exercise anyone?

Recommended Posts

OK--we've all been banded and recovered now--who is exercising?

I am fortunate that the hospital where I was banded includes an 8-week exercise program with a trainer as part of the package. I started last week (1 1/2 weeks post-op) and am up to 40 min. on the treadmill and 30 min. on the bike. I am going to start with some light weights this week.

Here is the FUN thing that I am hoping to do--locally, we have several walk/runs throughout the fall/winter. The first is Thanksgiving morning (2 miles) and I am planning to walk it with my husband. There is one each month in December, January, and February. The longest is 4 miles. For each, you get a t-shirt (I am a sucker for those!).

Another thing I found through the YMCA is a fall hiking challenge that has you do 6/10 different trails in the area and you get a t-shirt for completing it (yes, another t-shirt!).

I just wanted to encourage you to start exercising if you haven't and maybe join a group or train for a walk or run. A friend of mine who is newly single joined a contra dancing group and is meeting new people and having a great time (she is quite overweight).

I am so proud of myself for actually GOING to the gym (a big thing for me). The good feelings last all day after I work out!

I just got a Wii Fit. I have a gym membership but finding time to go is tough. I'm don't know if I'm ready yet. I thought maybe doing the eliptical. I don't want to do any weights until I'm a month out...so it would be after my first fill.

Anne, you are doing awesome already! Julie.Ann, I've heard the WiiFit is so much fun & worth it!

I started walking right away and do a bit of extra walking at work. I got on my treadmill finally last week and was in enough pain to bend over and yell. My insides were in so much pain:unsure:. I haven't hopped back on it, but I have continued to walk more at work.

I appreciate this thread ~ need it for continued encouragement.

I am just walking right now. Hiked 3 miles with the dogs today. At six weeks I plan on getting back to my routine of working out with my trainer 2x a week and pilates. I miss it! Don't tell my trainer that though! :rolleyes2:

I haven't done yoga, but I do do pilates and there were other plus sized people in there. The biggest thing is to find an instructor who can modify in a class situation. Since I had my big belly in the way I couldn't do some of the exercises, but she was really good about giving me alternatives.

At the present time I am not exercising. I had a port replacement last week because I lost the sutures and it flipped over. I am a little hesitant because I think that I may have over done the excercise and training hard with a personal trainer. Has anyone heard of this happening to anyone else? Thanks!

I have heard of it. I had some pain about a week post op while sitting at my kid's concert. I will be happy after my first fill to make sure my port is ok.

I've been walking my dogs 4-5 times a week, doing the Wii Fit 3-4 times a week.

With the weather getting colder I was afraid I wouldn't keep up the dog-walking, so I joined a gym! I'm shocked I did that, but I've actually been enjoying going. I do about 30 minutes on the treadmill, a few of the strength machines, then 10-15 minutes on the stair stepper before I try to leave on jelly-filled legs! It's made a difference.

Julie-what you might get are some small handweights (like 5 lbs) and just do some arm curling while watching tv or something. It definitely won't bother your incisions and will start to build muscle in your arms (you may need more weight-but I didn't!). I am using some at the gym but had some at home and use the lighter weights just randomly. OR, you can use canned veggies!! ;)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
