newly banded - not losing

Recommended Posts

Help, Today marks the end of my second week being banded and I was planning on starting soft foods tomorrow, but I don't feel like I have lost any weight yet. I am down about 6 pounds from the surgery. I have been eating nothing, only drinking shakes and 1/2 cup Soups once a day. I am reluctant to start eating if this is all I am losing with not eating. Is this normal?:(

I'm just guessing here, but maybe the shakes you're drinking and the Soups you're eating are high in calories? I've been drinking mostly crystal light and low sugar apple juice, and eating sugar free pudding and sugar free popsicles, and I've lost 6.6lbs since in 5 days, lol. I'm staying away from Protein Shakes for now, they fill me up to the point of nausea and I can't drink much at a time. So I drink maybe one Protein Shake a day.

You might not be getting ENOUGH calories in...people seem to think that if they starve themselves then they lose more weight. This isn't the case. Find out how many calories you need for you BMI, activity level etc. And btw 3 lbs a week is nothing to sneeze at.

Actually yes, that makes more sense. Not getting enough calories would hinder weightloss. :D I should probably start trying to get more calories in myself! I am just so afraid to eat anything of substance since being banded. :rolleyes2:

Good luck. I don't think I am getting more than about 600 calories a day if that, and I am trying to stick as closely to the dr.s instructions as possible. I am not moving as much as I like since I am not working. Start back tomorrow, maybe that will kick things in gear. Thanks

Remember, the first six weeks are really about healing, not losing. Some folks don't lose until they have a fill or two or three.

Yep! This is your time to heal. Any weight loss at this point is a bonus. However, I would closely keep track of what you're intaking and keep bad food choices (empty calories) to a minimum. It takes most people quite a few fills to get settled in. It's hard to keep from getting frustrated but it will get easier as you progress.

Ok, my question is... I was banded on 10/24. By the 3rd day I was fine with drinking fluids. It's now been, 2.5 and I'm already eating. yes I know I'm not suppose to, but I stay so hungry! I'm, afraid I'll strech my stomach, is this possible? I'm not eating anywhere near wha i use to, but I'm already eating "soft foods". I'm afraid I'll gain weight before my 1st fill in 3 weeks. Anyone else have this problem?

Eating even soft foods until the band is healed on your stomach can cause the band to slip. If not now, later on down the road. You are risking losing your band.

This is the time for healing not for losing. Quit worrying about stretching and start worrying about the band not healing on your stomach because it is moving trying to digest food.

Your band probably won't slip this soon, but it could later on down the road because the whole purpose of the post op diet is so that the band can heal properly on your stomach.

If the stomach moves which is does digesting foods, the band can't form the adhesions it needs to stay in place later on when you are eating normal meals. You will never know now if you have a slip later on down the road if it's because you didn't follow the post op diet, or if it was going to slip anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
