Exercise at about 9 months

Recommended Posts

I keep hearing that you have to up your exercise as time goes on but this doesn't seem to be helping me at all. Just wondering if anyone else is seeing the same thing or if I need to do something else. If you guys wouldn't mind posting what you did at the start, what you're doing now, are you still losing weight and if you think it's helping. Thanks.

For me its -

Starting out - nothing, then after surger I was doing a short, 10 minute walk. The I switched to an aerobic workout and recently added a walk back in.

Now - I do about 20 minutes of aerobic workout and walk just under a mile in about 15-20 minutes 6 days a week.

I'm still losing but I think it's just because I changed my diet a bit. I didn't see any improvement when I added the morning walk every day.

Immediately post surgery I was back to walking from work - about a 1.5 mile walk. It would take me about 45 min immediately (as in a few days) after surgery. Now I am doing it in about 25 minutes of a brisk walk. I do that on average 3 times a week - usually weather dependent though, and heading into the long cold winter I expect that will decrease.

I certainly have 'upped' my exercise though - I joined the Y at month 4, committed to going 3 days a week, then 4. Most weeks I am going 5 or 6 times, but not all. I have been switching up the activities too - from swimming, to adding cycling, treadmill to the elliptical and have added upper weights/strength training.

I notice more a body shape change then a weight change - I was doing all of this was when I went through the horrid plateau, and that was 6 weeks with NO change in weight. But maybe it takes a while to 'kick in'. I don't know, I just keep doing it in the hopes that it does make a difference.

Ezma -

I'm probably a little different than most people. I actually love working out and do it often.

Before surgery, I was walking 60 minutes 3x/wk.

Now, at nine months, my workout schedule looks something like this.

Mon - 60 minutes treadmill - intervals 3.5 - 7.0 mph.

Tues - 60 min FIT class - combo strength and aerobics

Wed - 60 minutes kickboxing

Thurs - 45 minutes cycle/spinning class - just added last month - absolutely kicks my ass.

Fri - day off

Sat/Sun - Usually, I'll go one of the two days to walk on the treadmill.

I definitely push myself when working out, and I think that doing the strength training has really helped with my skin while losing weight.

Although I've only lost 50 pounds, my body is REALLY different...

Keep moving! It will help eventually, I'm sure.

Anna

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
