I'm having my banding Nov 24. On my upper GI the Dr noticed a hiatal hernia and is going to repair it at the time of the banding. He said this was common with alot of people. If anyone else had this problem was the recovery time any longer and how much pain afterwards. I'd appreciate any comments you can share. Thanks to all

Hi Pontiac! I had a HUGE hiatal hernia, the largest my PCP had seen in over 30 years of practice. I'd have to say the improvement in what I feel after surgery is more from the repair than from the Lap Band itself. With that said, the hernia repair itself is painless and doesn't add or detract from the rest of what goes on with the Lap Band, at least in my experience. The only possible exception to that is that I had some referred pain in my left shoulder (go figure) maybe a little longer because the hernia repair was so extensive. But as far as healing from it and feeling the effects, I'd say it's negligible. You'll have enough to think about with your new lifestyle with the band, and the hernia repair is so minor it's almost like a band-aid in comparison to the lifestyle change of the band. Nothing to worry about!

Enjoy the journey!

My upper GI and endoscopy said I had a huge hiatal hernia, and surprise to me, and my surgeon, he got in there, and nothing.

good luck with your surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
