Anyone beaten sleep apnoea?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

I'm really interested to hear if anyone with severe sleep apnoea has been able to throw out their CPAP machine and if so how long/how much weight did it take?

This is one of the main reasons for me having the surgery. I stop breathing 100 times per hour when sleeping and I hate the machine. I have about 20kgs (40lbs) to lose and I'm really hoping it will make a difference.

I'd love to hear your sleep apnoea stories...

Never got the machine because I can't stand anything on my face. My sleep apnoea caused to wake 4, 5 even 6 time each night. Consequently, at the worst point, I fell asleep frequently during the day. It got so bad that I would actually fall asleep in meetings at work and couldn't stay awake at my desk. Once I even fell asleep while I was on the phone. The final straw happened when I caught myself falling asleep while I was driving. It scared me so bad that I joined a car pool for fear I would hurt myself or someone else if I continued to drive by myself. To make a long story short (too late) the weight loss has really helped. After I lost an initial 30 to 35 lbs I noticed that I was not falling asleep during the day and that I was sleeping much better at night. I have more energy now during the day and anticipate that I will continue to improve as the weight continues to go down. Hope this helps,Best Regards . . .

I have so much more energy now and don't need near as much sleep as I used to. I average 6 hours of sleep per night and DON'T need to nap during the day. It is great. My DH says I sleep more soundly and my breathing is regular and I don't snore like a freight train anymore. As far as how much I lost before I noticed a difference I think it was around 40 lbs but then again I would imagine it would depend on how much you had to lose. I know that after 73 lbs I get up at 5:00 a.m. and don't go to bed till 11:00 or 11:30 and am wide awake at 3 in the afternoon which before I would come home and take a nap. It will happen gradually and you won't even realize it till you discover you are awake more and alert. Good luck

Thanks I really hate the CPAP machine and I find even after having it for a year and a half I still rip the mask off during the night so still feel very tired during the day. I really hope the surgery fixes it.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
