Odd liquids question..

Recommended Posts

I have been on my liquid diet and honestly, it's not so bad. I look forward to mushies and then REALLY look forward to real food...but I am doing fine by liquids and am 100% sticking to it here.

Problem: I was banded on Oct. 31st, and have progressed gradually.

1st night, 30cc's of juice an hour.

next day, 120cc's of juice and remained that way on sunday.

monday, was told i can go to popsicles, Soups, Jello, pudding, yogurt. my intake was minimal.

I'd eat until i was full. then force myself to eat whatever was left over, so my body felt it..so i can re-train myself to know when i am full ..i know..masochistic, and the lump in the chest sucked.

On Monday-Thursday, i cook a can of Soup..i can get through 3/4 of it. Then force down the last 1/4...Dumb I know, but like I said...re-training.

Here today, I wake up. Do my Protein drink and a small cup of juice. Go to work, and have a sugar free pudding for mid-morning snack. lunch is a can of Soup. I am fine...until 2 hours later...I want more soup. So I go to my deli next door and get a large Tomato Soup thinking, half now...half later tonight. It's about the large size you'd get at any deli. Thing is, I ate it all....every spoonful. I'm not completely full...still hungry.

My question is...Did I do something wrong, by forcing that extra bit of soup each day...or is my stomach swelling going down to allow more liquid to pass the band causing me to intake more? Is the fact I could probably eat 2 cans of cream soup at a sitting a bad thing to do, if i do it? I am getting a bit nervous here.

Only your doctor can truly answer that question. If your doctor put in your band without any fill, then probably not. The swelling is going down from your surgery so you will feel more hunger, BUT you really shouldn't force yourself to eat more than you need to feel satisfied. Once you have fill in your band, forcing yourself to eat more can stretch your pouch, making it more difficult for you to feel satisfied with less food. When you reach satisified, just stop eating. Forcing yourself to keep eating isn't going to retrain your brain IMO. It will only continue bad eating habits.

I agree with Slim! You probably didn't hurt yourself, but stop it! This band thing is a real head trip, so don't feel dumb or masochistic, just quit forcing yourself to eat.

You are healing, feeling better, as Slim said swelling going down, and you're going to get hungry. Just stick to what your doctor tells you to do.

I was banded on Oct. 27th and felt hunger on the 2nd day and have had no problem with nausea or vomiting. I saw my doctor yesterday and he said that I will be hungry until I get my first fill on Nov. 25th. He said to eat several small meals a day at 1/2 cup each. This way you won't stretch your pouch out before you get filled. I hope this helps. I could probably eat a lot more but I stop myself and just deal with the hunger. He said I probably had very little swelling and that's why.

Your body is giving you the signal its got enough. By forcing in more, you aren't retraining your body to know when its full (it knows it!), you are simply doing what you most likely always have done - eaten a bit more.

I find it difficult to understand how a person can go through this major surgery to install a tool that will let them eat LESS and then FORCE themselves to eat MORE. Are you trying to undermine your success? STOP eating when you feel satisfied. Even if you have to throw it away. Better in the trash than on the tush!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
